Boekelo is a village with 2,525 inhabitants in the municipality of Enschede in the province of Overijssel in the Netherlands .

history

The village was best known for the extraction of salt , which had been located in the south of the village since 1919. With the construction of the Twente Canal , however, the plant and thus the headquarters of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Zoutindustrie , one of Akzo Nobel's predecessor companies , was relocated to Hengelo . In the northeast of the village a bleaching plant , the NV Boekelosche Stoomblekerij, was opened in 1888 . The company was taken over by Unilever in 1965 and last traded under the name Texoprint. The factory was closed in 2001, and since 2008 a new building area has been built on the former factory site, with some of the old factory buildings being retained.

The international eventing Military Boekelo takes place annually in Boekelo , and in 2012 it is part of the newly founded Nations Cup series in eventing . The best-known son of the village is the jazz drummer Hans Dekker .

In 1884 the " Geldersch-Overijsselsche Lokaalspoorweg-Maatschappij " opened a railway line from Winterswijk via Boekelo to Hengelo . A year later there was also a connection from Boekelo to Enschede. Passenger traffic was discontinued on both routes in 1936 and 1937; the route to Hengelo was dismantled by the German occupiers in 1942. The route between Enschede and Haaksbergen remained in operation for goods traffic until 1973, and museum trains from the Museum Buurtspoorweg have been operating here since 1971 . Museum traffic has been limited to the section from Boekelo to Haaksbergen since 1974, as the route to Enschede was interrupted by the construction of the A35 motorway and subsequently dismantled.

In public transport , Boekelo can now be reached from Enschede by bus line 6.
