The Australian Sevens are a tournament within the World Rugby Sevens Series , a series of competitions in rugby seven . It currently takes place at Sydney Football Stadium , before that at Robina Stadium ( Gold Coast ), Adelaide Oval and Ballymore Stadium ( Brisbane ).

history

The first edition of the Australian Sevens in 2000 was the Brisbane Sevens as part of the 1999/2000 season. Since then, Brisbane has hosted a World Series tournament every year through 2003, save for 2001 when the IRB canceled the Brisbane Sevens in response to Australian sports sanctions against Fiji. After 2003 there was no 7-man tournament in Australia for the next three years.

For the 2006/07 season, Adelaide secured the right to host a 7-a-side tournament. The Adelaide Sevens replaced the Singapore Sevens and would be part of the World Series for the next five years.

In April 2011, the Australian Rugby Union announced that tournaments would be held at Robina Stadium in Gold Coast for at least the next four seasons . The attendance figures were much lower than expected in the last two seasons, so it was decided to play the tournament for the next four seasons at the Sydney Football Stadium .
