The Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti , also known as El Monumental or Estadio River Plate , is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Belgrano district of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . The venue currently has 65,645 seats. It is named after Antonio Vespucio Liberti (1902–1978), a former president of the association. The River Plate football club is the owner and plays its home games in El Monumental . In addition, since it is the largest stadium in the country, the facility is used as the national stadium by the Argentine national soccer team .
history
El Monumental was built from 1936 to 1938 and opened on May 25, 1938 with a game between River Plate and Uruguayan club Club Atlético Peñarol (3-1). An athletics facility was installed for the 1951 Pan American Games . In 1958 the north stand was completed. At that time the stadium had 100,000 seats. The Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti was renovated for the Football World Cup in 1978 and at that time still offered 76,600 spectators. Nine games were played during the World Cup at El Monumental, including the opening game with Germany and Poland and the final between Argentina and the Netherlands . In 1986 the facility was given its current name. Since then, only minor work has been carried out on the stadium.
Sports facilities
In addition to the actual stadium, the complex also offers tennis and basketball courts and rooms for other sports. There are also apartments for young footballers, a theater and a club museum.
Concerts
There are also concerts by well-known international artists in the venue. The stadium can hold up to 100,000 people for concerts. It occurred u. a. the Rolling Stones , Bruce Springsteen , the Ramones , U2 , Metallica , Oasis , Bon Jovi , Guns N 'Roses , Madonna , Michael Jackson , KISS , AC / DC , Rod Stewart or the Red Hot Chili Peppers . But national artists are also guests here.
