The soccer World Cup final Netherlands - Spain on July 11, 2010 was the final of the Soccer World Cup 2010 , which Spain won 1-0 after extra time against the Netherlands .

Facts

For the first time since 1978 , there were two teams in the final, neither of which had ever become world champions . With the victory of the Spaniards, a second parallel to the Football World Cup 1978 was established: Since then, it was the first time that a team became world champions, although they suffered a defeat in the course of the tournament. The fact that a team was still world champion after an opening defeat, however, was a novelty.

For the first time since 1962 , the World Cup trophy stayed on the same continent, namely in Europe . For the first time ever, he changed the country, but not the continent. With Spain, a European team became world champions for the first time in a final outside of Europe.

It was Spain's first victory in the first final and the Netherlands' third defeat in the third final. Before that, they had lost to the host nation's team in the 1978 finals in Argentina and the 1974 World Cup in Germany.

According to figures collected by KantarSport on behalf of Fifa, the final reached 909.6 million viewers who watched the game for at least one minute and 619.7 million viewers who were there for at least twenty minutes. In both cases, only people who watched the final at home were considered.

The winner of the first meeting of the two teams during a world championship was correctly predicted by Kraken Paul .

The ball used in the game was a gold-plated version of the Jabulani World Cup ball .

Course of the game

The game was played unusually hard, although the referee issued early warnings in the form of yellow cards. Five yellow cards were distributed in the first half hour of the season and nine yellow cards by the end of the second half. Three more yellow cards and one yellow-red card were added in the extension. Nigel de Jong kicked Xabi Alonso's chest with a stretched leg for discussion . Robben gave away in front of Casillas before Iniesta scored the winning goal for Spain in the 116th minute in extra time . Previously, the referee had sent a defender from the Netherlands, Heitinga, in the 109th minute after a foul on Andres Iniesta with a yellow-red card .
