The hotel complex

The MGM Grand is the third largest hotel in the world in terms of number of rooms after the First World Hotel in Genting, Malaysia and the Venetian Resort (if you consider it as a hotel together with The Palazzo ) in Las Vegas. The MGM Grand has 5,044 rooms, of which 751 are suites. On the upper two floors there are 51 two-storey lofts (Skylofts) , which in themselves belong to the Leading Hotels of the World , and The Mansion has 29 private villas. The low street-side part of the hotel, which already existed as the Hotel Marina before the MGM Grand was built , was refurbished with designer rooms in 2005 and marketed as the West Wing .

The MGM Grand Garden Arena with 15,200 seats (Grand Garden) , which is known as the venue for boxing matches, belongs to the MGM Grand Hotel . Other smaller theaters are also available (including that of the des Cirque du Soleil ( KA Theater )) and the 720-seat Hollywood Theater, where David Copperfield regularly performs. In addition to the mandatory casino, there is a shopping center and numerous restaurants, bars and nightclubs within the hotel complex. Behind the hotel is the Grand Pool , a "pool area" with four different pools and a water flow (Backlot River). The 13.3  hectares large amusement park behind the hotel was torn down several years ago. Three high-rise apartment buildings for the new hotel The Signature at MGM Grand were built on the site in 2006 . The hotel is attached to the MGM Grand Hotel and offers 1,728 suites.

All hotel facilities together offer 6,853 rooms.

History and profile

The hotel opened on December 18, 1993 and cost $ 2.4 billion to build. It bears the name of an older hotel in Las Vegas that burned out in 1980 (87 dead). This building still stands and has operated as Bally's Las Vegas ever since . The MGM was named after the great Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , whose trademark is the roaring lion; This choice of name came about because the film company and the casino operator owned a joint majority shareholder in Kirk Kerkorian .

For this reason, the MGM Grand had a “film theme” at the opening. a. the landscape from The Wizard of Oz in the entrance area. The entrance was a prismatically broken yellow painted concrete lion, under whose head was the casino entrance. In a later renovation it was replaced by a more noble bronze lion (which also no longer gave the impression that you were going to the casino through its mouth). He is surrounded by bronze statues of men in Art Deco style, with bowls on their shoulders. Behind it there is now an LED wall that constantly changes colors. The interior is now Art Deco too. The lion logo can be found again at the top of the building. A glass construction was built into the casino itself, in which there are some living lions. They do not perform any feats, but you can watch them being fed (their roar comes from tape, however), but this attraction was closed in early 2012.

The MGM Grand Hotel was one of the locations in the film Ocean's Eleven . In the plot of the film, a boxing match was also fought at the MGM Grand. The boxing match between Óscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. took place in the Grand Garden on May 5, 2007 with the highest stock exchange to date .
