Inside the Luxor

The Luxor Hotel and Casino is a casino and hotel of four-star class in Paradise . It's on the south end of the famous Las Vegas Strip .

Creation and design

The Luxor is best known for its special exterior and interior design, which comes from the pen of the architect Veldon Simpson . The construction cost was $ 400 million. The hotel was completed by 6000 workers in 18 months. The outer shape resembles a black glass pyramid , with two other hotel complexes to the north - as seen from the Strip , to the right. These so-called towers are conventional steel frame buildings, each with 30 floors , which border the pyramid on the east and west. They are graduated and therefore look like they are made of cuboids , based on the design of ziggurats . The two towers were opened to expand capacity in 1998 after the opening of the Luxor . The rooms in the pyramid are a little cheaper than the somewhat newer and larger rooms in the adjacent towers.

The pyramid is 107 meters high and, like the towers , consists of 30 floors. In front of the hotel is a scaled-down replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza in its undamaged original condition on a scale of 1: 2, and near the entrance to the Strip there is a sandstone-colored obelisk that bears the name of the hotel in illuminated letters.

The hotel has a total of 4,400 rooms including 236 jacuzzi suites, making it the sixth largest hotel in the world . 16 inclined elevators , so-called inclinators , operate in the pyramid . The windows of the hotel rooms are sloping (approx. 39 degrees from the vertical), but the inner walls are all vertical. In spite of this architectural form, the special glass prevents the rooms from heating up excessively, with an additional air conditioning system in each room providing cooling.

At the top of the pyramid there is a ray of light directed vertically into the sky. It's so strong that you can see it from all over the Las Vegas Valley in good weather . In the spring you can see millions of moths dancing in the beam of light. The beam is generated by 39 xenon lamps.

During renovations in 2008/2009, the hotel was extensively renovated. In this context, much of the Egyptian interior design was replaced by more neutral, modern elements.

location

The Luxor is at the south end of the Strip , near McCarran Airport, and flanked by Mandalay Bay to the south and Excalibur to the north . These three hotels are linked by a free monorail system.

Attractions and shows

The hotel's attractions include two theaters , in which various successful artists have performed. For example, the Blue Man Group made guest appearances from February 2000 to September 2005 before the musical “Hairspray” took hold. The American clown and comedian Carrot Top is currently performing in one of the theaters , and the musical “Menopause” is also being performed there. The Blue Man Group is now appearing again in the hotel's theater, and the show "Fantasy" is also running in this theater. In the second theater, Criss Angel performs the show “Believe” together with artists from Cirque du Soleil . Further attractions are the exhibition "Titanic", in which real finds of the sunken ship RMS Titanic can be viewed. From 1996 to 2008 there was an IMAX cinema in the basement. When it opened, it was one of only 20 IMAX cinemas. After the cinema was closed, the "Bodies - The Exhibition" exhibition, which is similar to the Body Worlds traveling exhibition, opened there .

The public area of the hotel is divided into the actual casino level and the entertainment level on the fourth floor above. With the exception of the top three floors, the entrances to the rooms are open to the inside of the hotel and are only secured by a balustrade , so that what is happening on the entertainment level can be observed from there. On the other hand, the high altitude almost gives the impression of being outdoors on the entertainment level, which was also used in the form of an open, beer garden-like restaurant group (primarily for fast food ). There are shops, massage practices and numerous restaurants.

history

The hotel was built by the Mandalay Resort Group (formerly known as Circus Circus Enterprises ). In June 2004 the MGM Mirage Group bought the Mandalay Resort Group , so that the Luxor and the neighboring hotels Mandalay Bay and Excalibur are now in their possession.

There was originally an artificial river inside the hotel lobby that ran around the casino. Ferries operated on this river that took hotel guests to the respective elevators, which led to considerable delays. For this reason this service has been discontinued. In its place, the hotel offered "Nile tours", which offered a guided view of recreated sights from ancient Egypt . These trips were stopped shortly after the hotel opened. When the lobby was rebuilt in 1996, this artificial Nile was removed again.

On the entertainment level there was also a large discotheque, the Ra . It was closed in 2006 and reopened in 2007 under the name LAX with a new operator. In the following years further renovations were carried out, in 2008 a new Cirque du Soleil show with the magician Criss Angel premiered in the theater .
