List of the largest hotels

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the Palazzo extension - opened in 2008 - the Venetian in Las Vegas became the largest hotel in the world at the time

Most of the largest hotels in the world are in Las Vegas . The casinos not only attract tourists , but also help to keep room prices in the casino's own hotels low.

In the context of hotels, size is usually measured in terms of the number of rooms. You can also use the usable area or the height of the building as a measured variable. One motivation for building large hotels is the competition for prestige and size. In the past, huge hotels were built repeatedly in communist countries. One example is the gigantic 330-meter-high Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang , North Korea , which was never completed. Today it is the Southeast Asian tiger states that are trying to outdo the Americans with huge hotel complexes.

Hotel Kursaal in Maloja around 1900

Size doesn't always promise success. For example, the Hotel Kursaal in the Engadine village of Maloja fell into ruin. When it opened on July 1, 1884 , it was the largest and most modern hotel in the Alps with 250 rooms . In the year it opened, bankruptcy had to be filed after cholera broke out in neighboring Italy .

The Izmailovo hotel complex in Moscow, consisting of two hotels with a total of 2000 rooms, is considered the largest hotel in Europe. The Hotel Kosmos in Moscow has 1777 rooms.

The big hotels usually appeal to a mass audience. Often these are resorts made up of several buildings that offer rooms in different price ranges.

Remarks

The unfinished Ryugyong Hotel in the North Korean capital Pyongyang has long been considered the tallest building ruin : construction work ceased from the mid-1990s to 2009. Around 3,000 rooms were planned for the 330 meter high building.

The tallest building in Europe with a hotel is currently being built in Moscow: a large part of the two main towers of the Federazija, which are up to 354 meters high, are reserved for a luxury hotel.

The largest hotel in Western Europe is the 186 meter high Gran Hotel Bali with 52 floors in Benidorm on the Spanish Mediterranean coast . In Europe it is only surpassed by the Hotel Ukraine in the Russian capital Moscow . The building, which was completed in 1955 and was the tallest hotel in the world at the time, has only 34 floors despite a height of 198 meters - the spire is 75 meters high.
