When it opened in 1986, it was named Westin Stamford and was the tallest hotel in the world. In 2001 it was renovated together with its sister hotel Fairmont Singapore (formerly Raffles The Plaza ), which is located in the same complex.

After a management change in 2001, the hotels originally managed by Starwood Hotels and Resorts are now operated by Raffles International . Since 2006 the service zone in the underground of the hotel has been transformed into a shopping mall with around 50 additional shops in Raffles City, also known as Raffles Marketplace .

The Food and Beverage Outlets of Swissôtel The Stamford and Fairmont Singapore are both operated by the same management. In the Equinox Complex between the 69th and 71st floor there are several bars and restaurants .

The Swissôtel The Stamford also has conference rooms in which, for example, the 117th IOC session in 2005 was held. Since the first Singapore Grand Prix in September 2008 at the latest , the hotel has also been the first choice for Formula 1 teams before and during the Grand Prix; the hotel is right on the Marina Bay Street Circuit .

The Vertical Marathon has been held every year at the Swissôtel since 1987 . It is important to conquer the 1,336 steps up to the 73rd floor in the shortest possible time. The record from 2008 is 6 minutes 52 seconds.
