The Messeturm in Basel is a 31-storey high-rise completed in 2003. With a height of 105 meters, it was the tallest skyscraper in Switzerland until the Prime Tower was completed in 2011 in Zurich. It is currently the second highest in Basel and the third highest in Switzerland.

history

planning

With the decision of Messe Basel in 1994 to keep the traditional trade fair location, the need arose to revise the existing structures and add to them. In addition to a new, more efficient exhibition building, a high-rise building was also considered in the “Messe Basel Plus” master plan. There was hardly any public discourse about the building project in Basel. A year and a half competition period was launched in 1997 to implement the construction project. One of the requirements of the architectural competition was that the height of the skyscraper should not exceed 90 meters. In the first phase of the competition, the winning design from “ Morger & Degelo & Daniele Marques ” also adhered to this . In the revised version, the roof edge was raised to 105 meters to give the proportions an elegance due to the compact floor plan.

Construction work

With tree felling work on July 2, 2001, the demolition and excavation of the construction pit began. In September of the same year, the one-year work on erecting the supporting structure began. After the facade construction could begin in March 2002, the elevator systems were installed in August. The structural work was already completed on December 5, 2002, so that the hotel for the watch and jewelry fair could be opened in March 2003.

description

Location and surroundings

The Messeturm Basel stands on the eastern edge of the Messeplatz , north of the Rosentalanlage . It is therefore an integral part of the exhibition center in Basel . Due to its height, it is a dominant feature of urban development and is visible from afar due to the comparatively small number of high-rise buildings in Basel. Several Basel tram lines pass the exhibition tower . The exhibition center is a stop and an important tram traffic junction on the right bank of the Rhine. The hotel is accessed via Rosentalstrasse, which is a dead end. Apart from the trams, the area around the exhibition tower is designed as a pedestrian zone. To the north, adjacent to the exhibition tower, is Hall 2 of the Basel Exhibition Center, designed by Hans Hofmann , which stands out with its large clock on the glass facade. The exhibition car park is located southeast of the exhibition tower.

Architecture and technology

The 105-meter-high exhibition tower in Basel consists of a strictly vertical main structure and a laterally cantilevered structure, which optically only appears to overlap with the tower. Since the side structure is only two stories high, the narrow overlap also makes it appear as if it is floating. The barely profiled outer shell of the high-rise consists of a green-bluish glass facade.

use

The skyscraper is owned by Swiss Prime Site AG , Olten, and is managed by its subsidiary Wincasa AG , Basel branch.

The exhibition tower is used by various users. The lobby on the ground floor serves as a hotel hall and sales room and is used equally by all users. The fair's service center is on the 2nd floor. Above, on the 5th to 14th floor, there are 230 hotel rooms. The hotel, which originally belonged to the Sorat Group, has been operated by the H-Hotels AG chain since 2003 and opened as the Ramada Plaza Hotel Basel . In March 2017, the Hyperion Hotel Basel was rebranded . The trade fair administration is located on the 15th to 17th floors, and further offices are located on the 18th to 30th floors. On the 31st floor there is a viewing platform belonging to an event location ( Bar Rouge ) . Parts of the building technology are also housed on the top floor. The technical center as well as storage and ancillary rooms for office and hotel use are located in the basement. The delivery area and a multi-storey car park with 86 spaces are located under the exhibition center.

From 2004 to 2013 there was an annual flight of stairs in the exhibition tower , on which individual athletes, groups and fire brigade units ran through the staircase from the ground floor to the top floor. A staircase event for firefighters has been taking place at the St. Chrischona TV tower since 2014 .

On February 25, 2006, around 2 p.m., the base jumper Ueli Gegenschatz jumped from the roof of the exhibition tower and, after a short free fall, landed safely on the exhibition grounds with a parachute. Around 3000 spectators followed the jump from Gegenenschatz.
