List of high-rise buildings in Basel
The list of skyscrapers in Basel includes all completed or under construction skyscrapers with a structural height of 50 meters or more in the city of Basel . Buildings that are not used for commercial or residential purposes, such as churches or silos, are shown in the list according to their height for reasons of comparison, but not counted in rank.
The development of high-rise buildings began comparatively late in Basel. Until the middle of the 20th century there were no high-rise buildings apart from the tower house on Aeschenplatz (31 meters, built in 1928/9) and the Bürgerspital (34 meters, completed in 1937). There was no urban planning concept for the construction of such structures; the availability of building land and location dictated the development. A zoning plan was only introduced in 1939 and buildings over 28 meters long were classified as high-rise buildings.
After high-rise residential buildings on the outskirts of the city in the 1950s, the commercial high-rise on Heuwaage was the first high-rise in a central location. In the 1960s, the headquarters of Hoffmann-La Roche , Lonza , Ciba and Geigy were built as high-rise buildings. After the cautious 1970s and 1980s in the development of high-rise buildings, the decision was made in the early 1990s to strengthen Basel as a trade fair location. As a result, the exhibition tower was completed about ten years later , at 105 meters the tallest skyscraper in Switzerland at the time. Further densification of the greater Basel area resulted in 2015 with the Roche Tower (Building 1), another record high-rise in a nationwide comparison .
