Life and research

Emmert studied human medicine at the University of Würzburg from 1988 to 1995 . In 1996 he received his doctorate on the subject of "Investigations into the genotoxicity and mutagenicity of 1,2-dioxetanes in human cells using a plasmid shuttle vector". Emmert moved to the University of Göttingen for further clinical training in dermatology . In addition to his clinical work, he continued his scientific work in the field of DNA repair, among other things Emmert carried out studies on the chemoresistance of melanoma cells depending on their DNA repair status. In 1997, Emmert began his postdoctoral work at the National Institutes of Health in the USA, where he worked at the Basic Research Laboratory, Center for Cancer Research, of the National Cancer Institute in the research area of nucleotide excision DNA repair and Xeroderma pigmentosum. Emmert submitted his first clinical, molecular, genetic and epidemiological papers on Xeroderma pigmentosum. Emmert returned to the Dermatology Clinic of the University of Göttingen in 2000 and became a specialist in skin and venereal diseases in 2002, whereupon he became senior physician with additional qualifications in allergology , phlebology and drug tumor therapy in the general outpatient department and the photodiagnostics and therapy department of the dermatology clinic. His habilitation in 2003 dealt with "Investigations into nucleotide excision DNA repair and UV-induced carcinogenesis". Since 2005 he has been a university professor for dermatology and venereology .

Emmert's research focuses on the molecular genetic analysis of xeroderma pigmentosum and other genodermatoses , especially ichthyoses , as well as the importance of gene variations in DNA repair genes for skin carcinogenesis in the normal population and for the therapeutic response of malignant melanoma .
