The Meret Oppenheim skyscraper is an 81 meter high skyscraper built from January 2016 to 2019 in Basel in the immediate vicinity of Basel SBB train station . The house, which will be ready for occupancy from spring 2019, will be the third tallest in the city at the time of completion and is located in the Gundeldingen district . In addition to a restaurant, the Meret Oppenheim high-rise contains both offices and residential spaces. An editorial base for Swiss radio and television (SRF) is located in the building. The architects of the Meret Oppenheim high-rise are Basler Herzog & de Meuron .

The skyscraper is named after the German-Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim , after whom the street in which the skyscraper is located is named. The space between the high-rise building and the southern entrance to the station via the passerelle is also called Meret Oppenheim-Platz .

history

After the excavation was completed in early 2016, the foundation stone was laid on June 24, 2016 . The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on April 19, 2018 . The construction work was finished at the end of 2018. The forecourt was completed in early 2019, and the building itself has been ready for occupancy since January 2019.

architecture

The Meret Oppenheim skyscraper has a six-storey low-rise building on which partially, slightly offset, cubic floor units are connected. The lower part is intended for the restaurant and the Basel studio of Swiss television . The floors above are to be reserved for apartments. Terraces should be recognizable behind movable facade elements. Openings in the cubic basic structure should give the building a certain lightness.

The high-rise is part of a fundamental renovation of the area south of the track field from the SBB train station. The entire project development was carried out by SBB Immobilien under the overall project management of Daniel Strolz. To the east of the building, Meret Oppenheim-Platz is to be a pre-zone that will loosen up the densely built-up area.

Data and usage

The property area of the Meret Oppenheim high-rise is 3100 square meters and it is to have a total of 40,000 square meters of floor space. Of this, 784 square meters are to be used for gastronomy, 219 square meters for storage rooms, 11,752 square meters as offices and 12,460 square meters for living. There are 66 parking spaces for cars and 556 bicycle and eight motorcycle parking spaces.

In addition to being used as a residential high-rise, the Meret Oppenheim high-rise is where the SRF also has its studio location in Basel. 320 employees of Swiss television work there in the created department of culture, science and religion. The editorial team creates television, radio and online contributions. The contributions, an average of five per day, are produced and distributed on site. The first program was broadcast on May 7, 2019 from the Meret-Oppenheim-Hochhaus.

Facade detail
Northeast view

Since the facade of the Meret Oppenheimer skyscraper was lined, the rejection of the building has increased in Basel. It was criticized as being "gray", "bulky" and "oppressive monolithic megastructure". In the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the gray skin was described as elephant-like and included in a discussion about the "elephant in urban space". The Basel Architecture Association noted that the criticism came at an inopportune time. At least there was the opportunity to inspect the building before construction began. The project cleared all democratic and legal hurdles without referenda or objections to the construction. The reasoning that the building looks like a “high-security wing” is explained by the fact that all movable facade panels are closed before the reference date. As soon as the building is inhabited and this is unfolded accordingly, a visually differentiated and more varied picture will appear. Regardless of the sometimes questionable criticism, the association criticized the architects' “noble restraint”. In a direct democracy this is out of place. The architects have a responsibility to get more involved and to have a real discourse.
