The St. Anton Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Swiss city of Basel . It is located in St. Johann - Quarter and the St. Anthony of Padua dedicated.

The church was built between 1925 and 1927 as the first pure concrete church in Switzerland by the architect Karl Moser and the construction company G. Doppler und Sohn in exposed concrete . On September 13, 1931, the church was consecrated by Bishop Joseph Ambühl . In the early years, the building was mockingly referred to as the soul silo .

architecture

The exterior of the Church of St. Anton shows itself as a closed overall form, composed of three main parts: the portal , the longitudinal structure and the bell tower . The ground plan of the church is rectangular and measures 60 by 22 meters. The height measures 22 meters. The body of the church fits completely into multi-storey residential buildings on both sides, but is raised by its higher ridge , the entrance section and the tower . The tower height is 62 meters, with the bell chamber alone with its five bells measuring 12 meters. There is a high concrete cross above everything.

Everything inside is functionally designed. Eight slender concrete pillars support the barrel vault and the coffered flat ceilings of the narrow aisles . Due to the confessionals inside, six cubes protrude slightly from the overall cube. The windows, divided by three vertical and three horizontal concrete bars , which are each 4.80 m wide and 13.80 m high, significantly shape the interior through their colourfulness and the resulting lighting effects. The high colored windows, in combination with the red-brown of the clinker floor made of Lausener clay , give the church interior a peculiar, inviting character. The choir is not very spacious and heavily furnished. Opposite is the singing gallery and organ . All construction parts, outside as well as inside, remained unplastered and unplastered.

Furnishing

The furnishings were mainly determined by the architect Moser, who drew the designs for the altar , cross and pulpit .

The Way of the Cross who sculptor Max Uehlinger (* 1894 in Zurich , † 1981 in Minusio ) carved in stone and in brass -driven wreath relief comes from Franz Herger.

Particular attention was paid to the eleven windows for which a competition was announced. The main criteria were: a total area of 70 m², antique glass as the material to be used and the lower half should show a field of figures about the life of Antony and Jesus. In 1930 they were completed.

organ

The large organ was built in 1930 and 1931 by the company Orgelbau Willisau AG (LU), which no longer exists , and was consecrated on September 6, 1931. The instrument with almost 5000 pipes is the first large organ in Northwestern Switzerland with an electro-pneumatic action. The 62 sounding registers are divided into main work, positive, swell and pedal. The instrument has had a mobile console since 1961 . The arrangement comes from the Bernese organ expert Ernst Schiess (1894–1981) and is as follows:

Renovations

Soon after the completion of the church, damage became apparent, as the reinforcing iron was not sufficiently covered, the concrete flaked off the rusting iron and cross bars of the large windows were sanded out. The impact of increasing air pollution made things worse. In 1950 the bell tower had to be secured with shotcrete and in 1962 the nave was repaired in many places. In 1973 the tower had to be renovated and in 1981 it was decided to subject the remaining areas of the church to a complete renovation .
