The silo tower (Bernoullisilo) is located in Basel's Kleinhüningen district at harbor basin 1 of the Rhine port there . In addition to its properties as a grain silo, it has a viewing platform from which one has a good overview of the city port of Kleinhüningen and the surrounding area including France and Germany. The 105 silo cells and the 20 bulk floors have a total volume of approx. 14,200 m 3 and thus hold almost 11,000 tons of grain such as oats, wheat, soybeans, barley and rye. The operator is Rhenus Port Logistics.

history

The silo building, now a listed building, was built in 1923 by the architect Hans Bernoulli together with the engineer Oskar Bosshardt for the Swiss shipping company and put into operation in 1926. This concrete silo with a brick shell was the first grain silo in Kleinhüninger Hafen and is of high architectural quality due to its arcade structure. The brick shell serves both for isolation and aesthetics and reflects the zeitgeist of the time to enclose utility buildings with a historicizing shell. Bernoulli was inspired by the Hamburg warehouse district when it came to the appearance of this silo construction .

In 1926, the viewing platform opened for the first inland shipping exhibition and was made accessible via a provisionally built outside lift. During the Second World War this served as an air observation post for the Swiss Army and the port's air raid protection. Later, an internal lift was installed, the mechanism of which is located in the turret above the platform.

After more than 80 years the terrace of the silo tower threatened to collapse and was renovated in 2006 together with the also dilapidated passage to Silo 3 across Hafenstrasse.

view

The viewing platform is accessible via a port tour, which is offered by the port authorities. However, the terrace is open to the public. a. also during the various events held there such as the open-air cinema of the new kino Basel in summer.

From the platform, which is 45 m above the ground, you have a view of what is happening in the port, the Rhine , the city of Basel and as far as the Sundgau hill country and the blue chain . The symbolic triangle of three countries is not far from the silo building , so you can overlook three countries ( Switzerland , Germany , France ) from the terrace . It should be noted here that the border between Switzerland and France runs in this area in the Rhine and the effective three-country corner is thus in the Rhine, immediately south of the three-country bridge .

Not far from the Bernoulli-Silo and its terrace is the Swiss Maritime Museum and our way to the sea .

Silo cinema

In summer, the new kino Basel shows films on the silo tower.
