Motel One is a German budget design hotel group. It was founded in 2000 by the entrepreneurs Ursula Schelle-Müller and Dieter Müller (formerly Accor ), who still manage the hotel brand at the headquarters in Munich .
In 20 years Motel One has grown to 73 hotels with almost 21,000 rooms across Europe.
history
The first Motel One opened in Frankfurt - Offenbach in 2000 . Other hotels near major German cities followed continuously.
From 2003 onwards, the company changed its strategy and prefers to look for downtown locations, close to sights, tourist attractions or with good transport links. The first centrally located hotel opened in Berlin-Mitte . Selection criteria for the construction of new houses are quality, location, design, price and individuality.
In 2006, the hotel group first presented its trademark, the turquoise Egg Chairs , in hotels in Nuremberg and Hamburg , the color and shape of which can still be found in the logo to this day.
Expansion into major European cities began with the opening of hotels in Salzburg and Vienna in 2011. The first Motel One in Great Britain was opened in Edinburgh in 2012 . In 2013, Motel One Wien- Prater opened the ten thousandth Motel One room. In 2014, the internal training academy “One University” started on the Motel One campus in Munich.
In 2017 Motel One started the digital membership program beOne. In addition, new flagships opened with Motel One Berlin-Upper West and the largest Motel One Berlin-Alexanderplatz with 708 rooms.
Since 2018 Motel One has also been represented in Spain and France with hotels in Barcelona and Paris . In 2019, Motel One Warsaw-Chopin opened the chain's first hotel in Poland.
General
Currently (November 2019) Motel One operates 73 hotels with almost 21,000 rooms in Germany , Belgium , the Czech Republic , Great Britain , Austria , Spain , France , Switzerland , the Netherlands and Poland .
Motel One is the founder and pioneer of the budget design concept. The company hires local artists who give each house an individual touch. At the same time, the Egg Chair and the color turquoise form constant design elements at all locations.
The interior of the hotels has a modern design and often uses the corporate identity color turquoise. Motel One offers guests an average room of 16 square meters, without a wardrobe, telephone, minibar and room service. Another important element is the spacious lobby.
Shareholders and shareholding structure
Motel One has been owner-managed since it was founded. Founder and CEO Dieter Müller and DMG Beteiligungs GmbH hold over 60 percent of the common shares in the hotel group.
One Hotels & Resorts AG holds a total of 64.72 percent of the shares in Motel One GmbH. 35 percent of the shares belong to the private investment company Proprium Capital Partners and Philippe Weyland, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of One Hotels & Resorts AG, holds a further 0.28 percent .
Business figures
In the 2018 financial year, a total occupancy rate of almost 77 percent was achieved. The turnover of the hotel operations rose by 22 percent to 487 million euros compared to the previous year and EBITDA grew by 23 percent to 150 million euros compared to the previous year.
One University
The One University on the One Campus at the headquarters in Munich is Motel One's own training academy. In cooperation with the International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef (IUBH), Motel One offers a dual study program for a Bachelor of Arts in tourism industry with a focus on hotel management.
One Foundation
In 2017 Motel One established the "One Foundation". In its first projects in Munich and Berlin, the foundation, accompanied by One University, supports disadvantaged people and those seeking protection with integration as well as education and training in school and at work.
