Boxing career

After 68 amateur fights with 64 wins, he switched to the pros in 1981 and won his debut on July 29th in Las Vegas . Until his first World Cup chance, he defeated 13 other opponents, including the two World Cup challengers Kelvin Lampkin and Arturo Leon. Against Ruben Muñoz, he won the US lightweight championship in October 1982.

On January 19, 1983, he boxed in Puerto Rico against Samuel Serrano (47-4) for the WBA super featherweight world championship and won the title through tKo in the eighth round. In August of the same year he played his second title defense against Benedicto Villablanca from Chile and won by knockout in the first round. On February 26, 1984, however, he was knocked out against Rocky Lockridge himself in the first round and thus lost his world title. He also lost his subsequent fight against two-time World Championship challenger Tony Baltazar in July 1984 on points.

Four subsequent wins brought him on July 7, 1985 in Las Vegas another world championship chance in super featherweight. However, he was defeated by the undefeated WBC title holder Julio Chávez by tKo in the second round. He then won on points against the later IBO title holder and four-time World Cup challenger Mario Martínez (38-2). However , he surprisingly lost to the later IBF World Champion Freddie Pendleton in March 1986 by knockout in the sixth round.

By early wins against Oscar Bejines (31-3), Sergio Zambrano (34-1) and the eventual WBO world champion Sammy Fuentes , he was able to hold in the rankings, but lost in March 1987 on points against Pernell Whitaker .

On November 12, 1987 he won against René Arredondo (40-3) by tKo in the sixth round and thereby became world champion of the WBC in the light welterweight division. In 1988 he played four successful title defenses against Mauricio Aceves (24-6), Harold Brazier (55-7), Rodolfo Gonzalez (41-6) and Vinny Pazienza (25-2). In his fifth defense of the title in May 1989, however, he lost again prematurely against Julio Chavez .

Following victories against, among others, José Rivera and Terrence Alli, he received an IBF World Cup light welterweight chance against Rafael Pineda on December 7, 1991 , but lost to the Colombian by knockout in the ninth round. By the end of 1993 he played eight more fights, of which he won five. He also defeated Livingstone Bramble , but lost to Zack Padilla , among others .

In his following seven fights he won the IBO world title in the light welterweight and welterweight division. On June 25, 1995 he boxed again for the IBF light welterweight championship, but was defeated by the title holder Kostya Tszyu on points. In May 1999 he played his last boxing match.
