Mauricio Aceves (born December 18, 1960 in Mexico City ) is a former Mexican professional boxer and first WBO lightweight world champion.

Career

Aceves began his professional career in 1979 and boxed in Mexico, the USA, Colombia, South Africa, England and Denmark throughout his career. In January 1989 he boxed in Montería for the first WBO lightweight world title , but only reached a draw against the Colombian Amancio Castro . The rematch and with it the world title, he won in May 1989 in Santa Ana by winning points over twelve rounds. He then defended the title in August 1989 in Los Angeles by knockout in the tenth round against Óscar Bejines. In September 1990 he lost the title in Brownsville by narrowly losing points to the South African Dingaan Thobela .

He contested other fights in his career against world champions René Arredondo , Alfredo Layne , Roger Mayweather , Jorge Páez and Shane Mosley . He ended his career in November 1996.
