801 Grand (sometimes called Principal Building ) is the name and address of a skyscraper in Des Moines , Iowa . It was completed in 1991 after two years of construction. It is 190 meters (630 ft ) tall, making it the tallest building in the city and in all of Iowa. It was designed by the well-known architects Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum and has 40 floors. The roof consists of tiles made of copper sheet. Over time, it would take on a kind of lid with a green tinge, as was the case with the Statue of Liberty . However, due to the low salt content of the air in Des Moines, this effect did not occur. The metal sheets did not turn green, but dark brown. There were discussions about removing the top layer and creating the effect artificially, but it was agreed to leave the roof as it is.

The building is mostly used for office purposes. Much of the office space is used by the owner, the Principal Financial Group . The bottom three floors contain areas for retail and gastronomy, and they are connected to the city's Skywalk network. There are also law firms among the tenants.
