The Principal Financial Group is a US-based publicly traded multinational investment management - and insurance companies headquartered in Des Moines ( Iowa ). The company is divided into four segments: Retirement and Income Solutions, Principal Global Investors, Principal International and US Insurance Solutions. The main market is the United States. The group is also active in Europe, Australia, Asia and Latin America.
The company employs approximately 9,000 people in Des Moines and owns and operates several buildings in the city center. The tallest, known as the 801 Grand , is 45 stories high (192 m) and is home to many other companies in addition to the Principal Financial Group. The company operates its Global Delivery Center in Pune ( India ).
history
The company was founded in 1879 by Edward Temple under the name Bankers Life Association . It has been operating under its current name since 1985. In the 1990s, it began expanding outside of the United States. The company went public on October 23, 2001.
