Sammy Fuentes (born February 18, 1964 ) is a former Puerto Rican professional boxer and WBO light welterweight champion.

Amateur career

As an amateur, he won bronze medals at the National Golden Gloves in 1980 and the North American Championships in 1981. In 1982 he won the silver medal in featherweight at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Cuba, after he was eliminated in the final against Adolfo Horta . At the 1982 World Championships in Munich , he was defeated in the second round against the Soviet European champion Serik Nurkassow.

He made his professional debut in November 1982 with a knockout win.

Title win

With a record of 29 wins, 13 defeats and a draw, he boxed on February 20, 1995 in California for the WBO world light welterweight title, which had become vacant after the resignation of title holder Zack Padilla . He defeated his Mexican opponent Fidel Avendaño (balance: 42-4, 25 K. o.) By tKo in the second round. He defended the title on June 10, 1995 in Las Vegas on points against the Mexican Héctor López (29-3, 17 knockout). In his second title defense on March 9, 1996 in Milan , he lost by tKo in the eighth round against the Italian Giovanni Parisi (31-2, 23 K. o.).
