Augustine "Augie" Anthony Sanchez (born November 17, 1977 in Las Vegas ) is an American boxing trainer and former boxer . He gained fame as the conqueror of Floyd Mayweather Jr. with the amateurs in 1996 and because of his WBO world championship fight against Naseem Hamed .
Amateur career
Augie Sanchez started boxing in his early childhood years, playing 186 fights as an amateur. In 1996 he won the US featherweight championships and qualified for the national Olympic qualification. There he had to compete in best-of-three mode against the winner of the 1996 National Golden Gloves in the featherweight division, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Sanchez won the first fight in Oakland in April 1996 with 12:11, but lost the next two games in Augusta with 8:22 and 11:23. Mayweather was then able to compete in the 1996 Olympic Games , where he won a bronze medal after losing to Serafim Todorow in the semi-finals .
Professional career
After being eliminated from the Olympic Trials, Sanchez switched to the professional camp and achieved numerous knockout successes, including 1999 against Jorge Paez and Daniel Jiménez . This opened him on August 19, 2000 a world championship chance in featherweight against the undefeated WBO title holder Naseem Hamed, who denied his 15th title defense. Sanchez landed strong hits, which led to a bleeding nose injury at Hamed and scored two head hits a knockdown in the second round, which was not recognized as such by referee Mike Ortega. In the fourth round, however, Sanchez lost by knockout.
In his next two fights he defeated Luisito Espinosa and again Daniel Jiménez ahead of schedule. In December 2001 he lost to John Michael Johnson by knockout in the first round and then ended his career at the age of 25.
Coaching
After his playing career, Augie Sanchez became a boxing coach at Barry's Boxing Center in Las Vegas, his father-in-law's boxing club, Pat Barry. World champions like Clarence Adams and Jessie Magdaleno have already trained there . He has three children with his wife Dawn.
At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Sanchez was assistant coach of the US boxing team, which won three medals.
