Beau Jack , actually Sydney Walker , (born April 1, 1921 in Augusta , Georgia , † February 9, 2000 in Miami , Florida ) was an American boxer .

Professional career

Beau Jack, who got this nickname from his grandmother, was from Georgia but boxed mostly on the east coast of the United States . He started boxing in 1939 and quickly became popular with his spectacular attack boxing and good taker skills. He holds the record with 21 major fights at Madison Square Garden .

He won his first title on December 18, 1942, defeating Tippy Larkin by knockout in the third round in the fight for the vacant NYSAC lightweight title. In his next fights in the spring of 1943, he twice defeated the welterweight Fritzie Zivic . He also beat the respected veteran Henry Armstrong , before losing his title in May 1943 by losing points to Bob Montgomery in the first of four duels. The second meeting with Montgomery in November 1943 he won, but lost the third meeting in March 1944, each for the title. In the same month he also won against Al "Bummy" Davis and Juan Zurita.

In August 1944, the fourth fight against Montgomery took place, a non-title fight to boost sales of war bonds , in which both boxers waived signing-up fees. Just under 16,000 of these bonds were sold for $ 36 million in revenue. Montgomery won the fight on points.

In 1946, Beau Jack won an early win against Sammy Angott . Against Tony Janiro he had to give up in February 1947 with a knee injury, but won the rematch in May 1948 on points.

On July 12, 1948, Ike Williams , who had previously defeated Montgomery by knocking out, met the powerful lightweight world champion and was knocked out for the only time in the lightweight. It was his last fight in this weight class, he had to boil too much.

In 1949 he was defeated by welterweight Kid Gavilán on points. He also boxed against Williams three more times, but couldn't beat him. The welterweight Gil Turner also defeated him prematurely. When he had to give up against Williams after the eighth round in 1955, he ended his career.

In 1991 Jack was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
