Bob Montgomery (born February 10, 1919 in Sumter , South Carolina , † August 25, 1998 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American boxer .
Professional career
Bob Montgomery, also known as Philadelphia Bobcat , became a professional boxer in 1938 and fought primarily in the cities of Philadelphia and Atlantic City .
He became known for his gripping fights against his rival Beau Jack . In their first meeting on May 21, 1943, Montgomery won the New York State World Lightweight Title by winning points after 15 rounds . In a rematch six months later, he lost it again to Jack.
After defeating Ike Williams and losing to Al "Bummy" Davis, Montgomery was able to win the New York State World Lightweight Title again by defeating Jack on points again in 1944.
The most famous encounter between Jack and Montgomery took place on August 4, 1944, in front of 15,822 spectators in Madison Square Garden . This fight was not a title fight. Attendants in attendance were encouraged to purchase war bonds , generating record revenues of US $ 35,864,000. Shortly after the fight, both were drafted into the US Army .
In 1946, Montgomery successfully defended his title against Allie Stolz and Wesley Mouzon. The subsequent fight against NBA title holder Williams, in 1947, Montgomery lost by technical knockout. From this defeat Montgomery should not recover.
In his 97 professional fights, Montgomery defeated some high-class boxers of the time, including Lew Jenkins, Davey Day, Lulu Costantino, Fritzie Zivic , Joey Peralta, Leo Rodak and Tony Pellone.
In 1995 Montgomery was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
