The Cariboo Regional District is a district in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is 80,609.75 km² and has 61,988 inhabitants (2016). In the 2011 census, the district had 62,392 inhabitants. The main town is Williams Lake .
The region became world famous from 1861 onwards through the Cariboo gold rush . The most important tourist town in the district is the ghost town of Barkerville , which was the main town of the Cariboo gold rush.
Today a large part of the district is protected by the various provincial parks, such as Bowron Lake Provincial Park or Ts'ilʔos Provincial Park .
