100 Mile House (or One Hundred Mile House ) is a community in the Cariboo District on the Interior Plateau in British Columbia , Canada .

The place was founded in 1862 during the gold rush under the name Bridge Creek House as a resting place between Kamloops and Fort Alexandria . The later name indicates the distance on the Cariboo Road (also called Cariboo Wagon Road or Great North Road ) to Lillooet (mile 0). This trail was created as a result of the Cariboo gold rush . In 1930 the place had twelve inhabitants and consisted of a rest house, a general store, a post office, a telegraph station and a power station.

Although the place is very small nowadays, it is an important forestry and tourism center in the region. Many lakes are ideal for boating, bird watching and fishing . The most important are Lac La Hache , Canim Lake , Horse Lake , Green Lake and Bridge Lake . 100 Mile House is also a center for winter sports. The place describes itself as the international capital of Nordic skiing .

Demographics

The census in 2016 showed a population of 1,980 inhabitants for the municipality, after the census in 2011 showed a population of 1,886 inhabitants for the municipality. The population has increased by 5.0% compared to the last census in 2011 and is thus close to the provincial average with a population increase in British Columbia of 5.6%. In the census period from 2006 to 2011, the number of inhabitants in the municipality increased by 0.1%, which is far below average, while the provincial average increased by 7.0%.

For the 2016 census, a median age of 51.5 years was determined for the municipality . The median age of the province in 2016 was only 43.0 years. The average age was 47.5 years, or 42.3 years in the province. For the 2011 census, a median age of 45.9 years was determined for the municipality. The median age of the province in 2011 was only 41.9 years.

The community is on Highway 97 and outside the village is a small airfield with a 670-meter-long paved runway.
