Differentiation from other forms of study

In contrast to the “classic course”, the practice-integrated course is closely linked to the practical training in the company, that is, there is a content-related relationship between the courses at the university and the practical phases in the company. A further qualification, for example in a recognized training occupation , is usually not obtained , in contrast to the training-integrated course .

Duration and procedure

Process of a PI course using the example of the technical course at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences

The course of a practice-integrated course is organized differently depending on the university . In general, theoretical phases in which students visit the university alternate with practical phases in which the students work in the company on a daily or weekly basis. Practice-integrated studies usually last 3–4 years (6–8 semesters ).

Fields of study and offer locations

The focus of the offered subjects lies with the economic and engineering sciences , the computer science and in the area of social services. Most of the time, you study at universities of applied sciences or vocational academies .

Financial aspects

Students who are integrated into practice receive monthly remuneration from the company in which they are employed during the practical phases. According to a survey carried out by duales-studium.de, this amounts to an average of 869 euros. However, numerous factors such as the state, company size and industry must be taken into account. Many funding opportunities can only be used to a limited extent by practice-integrated students. When it comes to awarding scholarships , students from a “classical course” are often given preference, as they do not receive a salary in contrast to students who are integrated into practice. Practice-integrated students are generally not eligible for BAföG , as the salary usually exceeds the BAföG allowance. There is not enough time for a part-time job , as the studies are very time-consuming. One possibility of financial support would be to take out a student loan .

Other advantages and disadvantages

In addition to the aspects already mentioned, there are other advantages and disadvantages for both students and companies.

Advantages:

  • Small study groups and individual support from the teachers.
  • Favorable financial conditions as the company pays remuneration.
  • The topic for the Bachelor thesis is often secured through the company.
  • Problems and tasks in the company are dealt with scientifically and practically by students . At the same time, the students learn to combine theory with practice
  • There is a transfer of knowledge from scientific findings to the company.
  • Improved job market and career opportunities , as the students are already working in a company and can be directly employed as qualified specialists .
  • There is no induction phase after graduation.
  • The course can be tailored to the needs of the company.

Disadvantage:

  • During your studies you are “tied” to a company.
  • In the event of termination, a repayment may have to be made to the company (e.g. semester fees paid by the company, etc.).
  • There are significantly more applicants than places .

Application process

A contract with a company is required to take up a practice-integrated course. Therefore, applying to at least one year in advance at a company with a university cooperates and practice integrated study courses offered. In addition to the certificate grades, emphasis is placed on commitment , independence , flexibility and willingness to learn. The motivation to complete a practice-integrated degree should already be made clear in the cover letter . It is important to ensure that the application documents meet the formal requirements. The most important selection criteria are the job interview and company- specific assessment center . If you have signed a contract with a company, you can enroll at the cooperating university.
