Qwest Communications International Inc. [ kwɛst ] was an American telephone company based in Denver ( Colorado ). The company was founded in 1996 by Philip Anschutz . Qwest provided telecommunications services in the western 14 states of Arizona , Colorado, Idaho , Iowa , Minnesota , Montana , Nebraska , New Mexico , North Dakota , Oregon , South Dakota , Utah , Washington, and Wyoming .
In 1998, Qwest and the Dutch national telecommunications operator KPN founded the pan-European data and hosting company KPNQwest. In November 1999, KPNQwest was listed on NASDAQ and the Amsterdam Stock Exchange . As a result of the dot-com bubble , KPNQwest went bankrupt in 2002 as one of the most important European IP network operators at the time: its network carried an estimated 50% of European IP traffic.
On April 22, 2010, CenturyLink announced that it would acquire Qwest through a stock swap. As of August 8, 2011, Qwest's former business operations have been renamed CenturyLink.
