Philip Frederick Anschutz (born December 28, 1939 in Russell , Russell County , Kansas ) is an American entrepreneur and billionaire . In 2009, the business magazine Forbes ranked him 37th among the richest Americans. In Germany he is active in a real estate project ( Mercedes-Benz-Arena Berlin ) and in ice hockey ( Eisbären Berlin and until 2016 Hamburg Freezers ).

Life

Anschutz took over his father's oil company in the 1960s. His paternal grandfather, Carl Anschutz (originally Anschütz), had emigrated from Russia to the USA with his Volga German family . He founded the Farmers State Bank in Russell, Kansas. In 1968 Philip Anschutz discovered oil in a field and took out a loan to buy all of the adjacent land. When there was an explosion at the source, Anschutz hired the famous fire fighter Red Adair . Anschutz sold the rights to film the rescue operation to Hollywood , where a film based on Adair's life was being shot. The $ 100,000 thus earned covered the cost of the operation.

In 1984 Anschutz acquired the parent company of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad , the Rio Grande Industries . Four years later, Rio Grande Industries acquired the Southern Pacific Railroad . Anschutz took over the post of Chairman of the Board of this railway company and was also Chief Executive Officer from 1988 to 1993. The 1996 merger of Union Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific made Anschutz the largest shareholder in Union Pacific with six percent of the shares.

He is also a co-owner of the Los Angeles Kings ice hockey franchise in the National Hockey League .

He owned 100 percent of the Eisbären Berlin through the Anschutz Entertainment Group . Until the 2015/2016 season, he owned 70 percent of the Hamburg Freezers. For the latter team, he decided not to apply for a license for the 2016/2017 season, whereupon the Hamburg Freezers were dissolved.

The construction and marketing of real estate continue to make up a major part of Anschutz's business area. In September 2008, his 160 million euro building O 2 World (since 2015 Mercedes-Benz Arena ) was opened in Berlin , the second largest multifunctional hall in Germany with 17,000 seats.

He is cautious about the press; he has not given an interview since 1974. He lives with his family in Denver .

Political stance

Anschutz is accused of supporting campaigns against homosexuals as a conservative Republican . It is also known that with the Discovery Institute , a large think tank that promotes intelligent design is co-financed with its money. From 2009 until it was discontinued in December 2018, he financed the conservative weekly paper The Weekly Standard through his Clarity Media Group .
