Conor Anthony McGregor (born July 14, 1988 in Dublin ) is an Irish mixed martial arts fighter with the UFC . He is a former UFC Lightweight Champion and UFC Featherweight Champion and a former Cage Warriors Featherweight and Lightweight Champion .

Beginnings

McGregor was born in the Dublin borough of Crumlin to Tony and Margaret McGregor. As a child he was enthusiastic about soccer and played for the local club Lourdes Celtic Football Club until he was 12 years old. He started boxing at the age of 12, then kickboxing and jiu jitsu when he was 15 .

After graduating from high school, McGregor survived doing odd jobs and then found a permanent job as a plumber. In 2006 he met UFC fighter Tom Egan, with whom he befriended and started training MMA. Although he worked up to 12 hours a day, he managed to train for several hours several times a week.

On February 17, 2007, he made his debut at the age of 18 in an amateur fight against Kieran Campbell, which he won by technical knockout. After the fight made him the Irish MMA organization Irish Cage of Truth Promotion a contract offer, which McGregor accepted. In 2008 he began to train under John Kavanagh. Due to the large amount of training required, McGregor had to quit his job as a plumber and was registered as an unemployed person for the next two years. In his circle of friends he announced that he would become a millionaire by his 25th birthday.

Careers in Ireland

McGregor completed his first professional fight on March 9, 2008 in Dublin against Gary Morris, which he won by technical knockout. At that time he was considered a very good striker, but he had great weaknesses in ground combat. After McGregor initially did not want to work on his ground fighting technique against the advice of his trainer, he lost on June 28, 2008 by giving up against Artemij Sitenikov. It was only after this defeat that he realized that in order to be successful, he had to greatly improve his skills in ground combat.

After McGregor improved his ground fighting technique in the next 2 years, he celebrated 8 wins in a row in 2011 and 2012 and became Cage Warriors Featherweight Champion and Cage Warriors Lightweight Champion .

Careers in the UFC

Due to the success of Cage Warriors, the US organization UFC became aware of McGregor, with whom he signed a contract in February 2013. He made his debut against Marcus Brimage at the UFC on Fuel Gala on April 6, 2013, whom he was able to knock out. On August 17, he defeated Max Holloway, but tore a cruciate ligament during the fight, which meant that he was sidelined for several months. On his comeback on July 19, 2014, he won a TKO against Diego Brandao in his hometown of Dublin.

In 2015 he defeated Dennis Siver and was allowed to compete against José Aldo in the title fight . However, the fight had to be postponed due to an injury to Aldo, whereupon McGregor fought instead against Chad Mendes , whom he defeated. On December 12, 2015, he won the title fight against Aldo after just 13 seconds by knockout. This knockout was the fastest in the history of the UFC title fight to date.

On March 5, 2016 at UFC 196 , a title fight with UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos was scheduled, with McGregor's attempt to become the first UFC dual-weight champion . However, this could not be completed because dos Anjos had suffered a broken foot a few days earlier. Therefore, McGregor had to rise to welterweight within 11 days to be able to contest the fight against the American Nate Diaz . With McGregor promoted to welterweight for two weight classes, his featherweight title was not at stake. Although McGregor dominated in the first round, he surprisingly lost to Nate Diaz with a rear naked choke (free choking from behind) in the second round.

At UFC 202 on August 20, 2016, McGregor won the rematch against Diaz by a majority decision by the judges.

In UFC 205 McGregor won against UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez in the second round by knockout. He is the first UFC Champion to hold two titles at the same time.

On August 26, 2017, there was a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas . McGregor lost to Mayweather in the tenth round by a technical knockout. McGregor made $ 75 million from the fight, five times what he made in his highest-paid UFC fight.

On April 7, 2018, McGregor was stripped of the UFC lightweight title due to inactivity. In the UFC 223 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White announced that the title of undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion would now be held by Chabib Nurmagomedov . McGregor's return to the ring was originally planned for the fall of 2018, due to the incidents during the UFC 223 Media Day on April 5, 2018 and the related legal consequences for McGregor, it will be before his court hearing on June 14, 2018 do not give new information. After he pleaded guilty in court on July 26, 2018 and reached a settlement with those affected, the charges were dropped after having attended community hours and had anti-aggression training. Thus he does not have to fear either a prison sentence or a deportation to Ireland. After the clearance to sign employment contracts in the US again, a fight between McGregor and Nurmagomedow for the UFC Lightweight Championship was officially announced for UFC 229 in Las Vegas on October 6, 2018, which he lost in the fourth round after a surrender .

After the fight, however, it came to a head when Nurmagomedow climbed out of the Octagon after his victory and had a fight with McGregor's teammate Dillon Danis. Thereupon two teammates of Nurmagomedows attacked the still recovering McGregor from behind. Both parties then had to be separated. Nurmagomedov was reportedly insulted. UFC President Dana White announced consequences of the mass brawl. For the time being, both fighters will not receive any money from this fight and copies of the footage were handed over to the Las Vegas police. Three members of Nurmagomedov's team were later arrested and released shortly afterwards. For security reasons, there was also no usual award ceremony, which annoyed Nurmagomedov, who was escorted from the hall under loud boos and police protection, but without a title belt. He threatens a ban and the withdrawal of his newly defended title. After a hearing before the Nevada Athletic Commission in December of the same year, the Irishman was banned retrospectively from October 6, 2018 and was thus eligible to participate again from April 6, 2019; in addition, he was fined $ 500,000.

Later in 2019, a fan filed a civil lawsuit based on an alleged incident of property damage in front of a hotel in Miami Beach , which was rejected in court, as well as a fight in a Dublin pub in the aftermath of which McGregor pleaded guilty and a fine of € 1,000 paid. Upon his return to the Octagon on January 18, 2020, McGregor defeated Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone within 40 seconds by technical knockout.
