Dennis Siver (born January 13, 1979 in Omsk , Russia ) is a German mixed martial arts fighter who is currently competing in the featherweight division of the UFC and was the first German to receive a contract with the UFC.
Life
Siver was born as a Russian-German in Omsk , Siberia . His first fights took place at small local events in Germany and England. Most often he fought for Cage Warriors at the time and was able to achieve three wins in four fights there. A win even against the highly popular professional fighter Jim Wallhead .
After that success, the UFC showed interest in him and had him fight Jess Liaudin at UFC 70 . Siver lost after 81 seconds in the first fight by giving up. His next appearance followed at UFC 75 against Naoyuki Kotani, whom he defeated by knockout in the second round, but then lost at UFC Fight Night 12 against the previously undefeated Gray Maynard by unanimous decision on points. After he lost his only knockout loss to date (October 2010) against Melvin Guillard after only 36 seconds at UFC 86 , Siver left the UFC.
Siver then competed at Tempel: Mix Fight Gala VII against Chas Jacquier and defeated him by giving up in the first round. Then, half a year after leaving the UFC, he returned to UFC 93. Siver won against Nate Mohr , Dale Hartt , Paul Kelly and Spencer Fisher , but also lost a fight against Ross Pearson .
At UFC 122 on November 13, 2010 in Oberhausen , Siver competed against Andre Winner and forced him to give up in the first round. On February 27, 2011, Siver won by unanimous decision of the jury at UFC 127 against the opponent George Sotiropoulos. At UFC 132, Siver won by a unanimous decision against Matt Wiman.
Siver was supposed to fight the Canadian Sam Stout at UFC 137, who withdrew from the fight due to the death of his coach. Instead, Siver competed against the American Donald Cerrone. Siver was hit early by a shocking head kick and a short time later brought down with a rear-naked choke.
After the defeat, Siver decided to switch to featherweight, as the size and range disadvantages of the lightweight made him more and more troubled and he was looking for new motivation. On April 14, 2012 Dennis Siver made his featherweight debut, defeating Diego Nunes by unanimous decision on points.
Siver was supposed to compete against Hawaiian Eddie Yagin at UFC 151. Since the event was canceled due to a short-term failure in the main fight and Yagin injured himself before a scheduled fight at UFC on Fox 5, Siver met Nam Phan on December 8, 2012 at the said event. Siver dominated his opponent over the full distance and secured a unanimous victory on points.
On February 16, 2013, Siver was supposed to meet Cub Swanson on UFC on Fuel TV 7 . However, he tore his medial meniscus during preparation and had to cancel the fight. The fight against Swanson was rescheduled on July 8 at UFC 162 in Las Vegas . Siver lost the match through TKO in the third round.
At UFC 168, Siver then met Manvel Gamburyan and secured a unanimous win on points. It was later revealed that Siver tested positive for hCG after fighting Gamburyan . Sivers victory was subsequently canceled and he was suspended for nine months.
After his suspension, Siver returned to the Octagon on October 4, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 53 in Stockholm. There he was able to beat Charles Rosa, who had jumped in at short notice, on points.
On January 18, 2015, Siver met Conor McGregor in his first UFC main fight at UFC Fight Night 59 . Siver lost the fight in the second round to a technical knockout.
After Siver missed the UFC Berlin event in 2014 due to his doping ban, he fought back in Germany for the first time in almost five years at UFC Fight Night 69 in Berlin. In the co-main fight he faced the Japanese Tatsuya Kawajiri and lost after three rounds unanimously on points.
