Martial arts career

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and beginnings in MMA

Penn was born in Hawaii and raised in Hilo . He started with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a teenager, trained under Ralph Gracie from the founding family of the BJJ and was the first non- Brazilian to win a gold medal in the black belt category at the World Championships of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation in 2000 . He then started with MMA and made his debut on May 4, 2001 at the Ultimate Fighting Championship 31 . After three victorious fights, including against Caol Uno , he competed in January 2002 at the UFC 35 against the lightweight champion Jens Pulver for the title and lost on points. After two victories, he fought against Caol Uno in February 2003 for the now vacant lightweight title. The title could not be awarded because the fight ended in a draw. Penn then fought a victorious fight against Takanori Gomi for the MMA fight organizer Rumble on the Rock, led by his brother .

UFC Welterweight Champion and K-1

Back in the UFC, BJ Penn competed on January 31, 2004 at UFC 46 in another title fight, this time against Matt Hughes for the UFC Welterweight Champion . Penn was able to force Hughes to surrender in the first round, but because he left the UFC after the fight to play K-1 matches in Japan , he lost the title without a fight. In Japan he won twice and lost one fight against Lyoto Machida , in between he completed another fight at Rumble on the Rocks .

UFC Welterweight Title Fight, The Ultimate Fighter

In 2006, BJ Penn returned to the UFC. On March 4, he was defeated there on points in a fight against Georges St. Pierre . The referees voted 2-1 for St. Pierre. Because St. Pierre was injured in training afterwards, Penn was allowed to compete against Matt Hughes for the welterweight title at UFC 63 on September 23 , and lost to TKO in the third round. In 2007 Penn worked as a coach in the reality TV series The Ultimate Fighter , where he looked after Jens Pulver's opposing team. In the final event of the season on June 23, he defeated Pulver in a lightweight two-round fight.

UFC Lightweight Championship

After the UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk lost his title because of taking steroids, Penn and kicked Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 on January 19, 2008 in a title fight against each other. Stevenson had to give up in the second round and Penn became the new lightweight champion. He was able to defend this title in his next fight against Sherk. Then Penn started another attempt to regain the Welterweight title, but was subject to Georges St. Pierre on January 31, 2008 by TKO. The defense of the lightweight title was more successful, where he was able to prevail against Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez . But on April 10, 2010 at UFC 112 , BJ Penn was defeated by Frankie Edgar and lost his title. The rematch on August 28 also went in favor of Edgar.

Another UFC career

On November 21, 2010 at UFC 123 , BJ Penn met Matt Hughes for the third time. Penn knocked him out in the first round after 21 seconds and was awarded the bonus for the Knockout of the Night . His fight, which took place on February 27, 2011 against Jon Fitch UFC 127 , ended in a draw. On October 29, 2011, he was clearly defeated by Nick Diaz in a hard-fought fight on points. He was clearly inferior to Nick Diaz and announced his resignation after the fight, badly drawn, as he wants to look after his family more in the future. On December 8, 2012, he dared a comeback against the Canadian Rory MacDonald , but also lost this fight clearly on points. On July 6, 2014, he faced Frankie Edgar for the third time and lost again, this time even prematurely through TKO in the third round.
