Diego Sanchez (born December 31, 1981 in Albuquerque ) is an American mixed martial arts fighter who competes in the welterweight class of the Ultimate Fighting Championship . His previous nickname is Nightmare , now he uses The Dream as a nickname. His match record is 23 wins and five losses.

Sanchez grew up in Albuquerque. He started karate as a child and was a wrestler during school . He then trained Gaidojutsu with Greg Jackson . He started his MMA career in June 2002 with the Ring of Fire . After a fight at the Aztec Challenge , Sanchez then went to King of the Cage . There he completed eight fights and one in between at Pride of Albuquerque . With a match record of 11-0 and the welterweight title from KOTC , he then took part as a middleweight in the first season of The Ultimate Fighter . He was able to beat Kenny Florian by TKO in the final event and was the winner of the season.

For his next fight, Sanchez switched back to welterweight and defeated Brian Gassaway at UFC 54 . This was followed by victories over Nick Diaz, John Alessio and Karo Parisyan. After a knockout victory over Joe Riggs at UFC Fight Night 7 on December 13, 2006, he tested positive for THC and was suspended for three months by the California State Athletic Commissio . On April 7, 2007 at UFC 69 , Sanchez suffered his first defeat against Josh Koscheck and then lost to Jon Fitch . In his next fights he won at UFC 82 over David Bielkheden and in The Ultimate Fighter 7 final over Luigi Fioravanti.

Then Diego Sanchez moved to the lightweight class. In his first fight against Joe Stevenson in February 2009 , he won on points and was awarded the bonus prize money for the Fight of the Night . The following points win over Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Final on June 20, 2009 won a World MMA Award as Fight of the Year . A title fight against lightweight champ BJ Penn was then scheduled for December 12 at UFC 107 . The match was stopped in the fifth round by the ring doctor and Penn won by TKO.

After that defeat, Sanchez returned to welterweight and lost to John Hathaway at UFC 114 in May 2010. In October he defeated Paulo Thiago at UFC 121 . He also beat Martin Kampmann on March 3, 2011 at the UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann on points. On February 15, 2012, he lost on UFC on Fuel TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger against Jake Ellenberger on points. In August he announced that he would compete in the lightweight again from now on.
