Paulo Thiago Alencar Artunes , known as Paulo Thiago [ ˈpawlu tʃiˈaɡu ] (born January 25, 1981 in Brasília ), is a Brazilian mixed martial arts fighter. His match record is 18 wins and 10 losses. He lives in Brasília and is a member of the BOPE military police special unit .

Thiago, who practiced judo , Brazilian jiu-jitsu , boxing and muay thai , began his career in July 2005 with the Brazilian organizer Storm Samurai . In October 2006 he won the one-time Gran Prix Planaltina tournament . About victories at Conquista Fight and Jungle Fight he finally got to the Ultimate Fighting Championship , where he competed in the welterweight division. On his debut at UFC 95 in February 2009, he beat Josh Koscheck by TKO in the first round and was honored with the bonus prize money for the Knockout of the Night . He then suffered his first loss when he was defeated on points by Jon Fitch at UFC 100 in July . After the following victory over Jacob Volkmann at UFC 106 , Thiago defeated Mike Swick at UFC 109 , which was rewarded with a bonus for the Submission of the Night . At UFC 115 he was then defeated by Martin Kampmann . Thiago was also defeated in his fight against Diego Sanchez, who went over the full number of rounds at UFC 121 , but he and his opponent received the bonus for the Fight of the Night . Thiago only won four of his last nine fights.
