Ben Barres

Ben A. Barres (born September 13, 1954 as Barbara Barres , † December 27, 2017 ) was an American neurobiologist and physician . His field of work was the study of the glial cells of the nervous system.

Life

After finishing school in West Orange , New Jersey , Barres studied biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Barres received a medical degree from Cornell University, and a PhD in neurobiology from Harvard University . After graduating, Barres got a job as a professor at Stanford University , California. His scientific discoveries included a. that the glial cells secrete chemical factors that promote the formation of new synapses and the breakdown of existing synapses, he also demonstrated signaling substances that induce the biological synthesis of myelin .

As a transsexual , Barres had sex reassignment surgery performed in 1997 .

He died as a result of pancreatic cancer discovered in April 2016 .
