Georges St-Pierre (born May 19, 1981 in Saint-Isidore , Roussillon ), also known as GSP , is a former professional martial artist. He was active in mixed martial arts , where he was UFC middleweight and welterweight champion. Georges St-Pierre was named “Fighter of the Year” at the 2009 World MMA Awards . He has a black belt in Kyokushin and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu .

Career

Georges St-Pierre made his UFC debut at UFC 46, where he defeated Karo Parisyan on points. His next fight in the UFC was against Jay Hieron at UFC 48; he defeated Hieron by TKO in the first round. After his second win at the UFC, he got the chance for the UFC Welterweight Title against Matt Hughes . However, he lost this fight by an arm lever a second before the end of the first round. It was the first loss in St-Pierre's career.

After his defeat he was able to defeat Dave Strasser in the first round at TKO 19 . He then returned to the UFC, defeating Jason Miller in a bloody fight on points. In August 2005, Georges St-Pierre fought against Frank Trigg at UFC 54. St-Pierre controlled the fight and won by a surrender in the first round. At UFC 56, GSP fought against the later UFC lightweight world champion Sean Sherk. He defeated Sherk in the second round by TKO - St-Pierre is the first fighter to defeat Sean Sherk prematurely. In March 2006 at UFC 58, St-Pierre defeated former UFC welterweight champion BJ Penn on points. This made him the first challenger for the UFC welterweight world title. Due to an injury, Georges St-Pierre could only start the rematch against Matt Hughes for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 65. St-Pierre won the fight by TKO in the second round. After the fight, GSP signed a six-fight contract with the UFC.

At UFC 69, St-Pierre lost the welterweight title to Matt Serra , the winner of Ultimate Fighter 4 , by TKO after 3:25 in the first round. His next fight he was able to win against Josh Koscheck on points. At UFC 79 he had another chance for the UFC Interim Welterweight Title . GSP won the fight against Matt Hughes with an arm lever after 4:54 in the second round and became the new UFC Interim Welterweight Champion .

At UFC 83 on April 19, 2008, St-Pierre fought again against Matt Serra. UFC 83 was the first UFC tournament in Canada, which was held at the Bell Center in Montreal. Towards the end of the second round, the fight was stopped by the referee because Serra could no longer defend himself. Georges St-Pierre became the new UFC Undisputed Welterweight Champion .

St-Pierre had his first title defense against Jon Fitch at UFC 87. Jon Fitch had won his last 16 MMA fights, eight of them in the UFC. Georges St-Pierre dominated the fight and won on points. At UFC 94, GSP fought BJ Penn for the second time. St-Pierre dominated the fight so much that after the end of the fourth round, Penn's brother asked the referee to stop the fight. St-Pierre's next fight was against Thiago Alves at UFC 100, where he again successfully defended his title. The next title defense he succeeded against Dan Hardy at UFC 111. St-Pierre won this fight by unanimous decision of the point judge by shifting the fight to the ground and Hardy dominating all 5 rounds. For the twelfth season of The Ultimate Fighter , St-Pierre was hired as a coach. St-Pierre's next fight was a rematch against Josh Koscheck at UFC 124, in which he defeated Koscheck unanimously on points (50-45, 50-45, 50-45). As when they first met, St-Pierre dominated the fight - this time he relied on his vastly superior boxing skills. He landed a total of 55 jabs in the form of head hits. During the first lap, Koscheck's right eye swelled due to a jab from St-Pierre. At the end of the fight the eye was completely swollen shut and Koscheck broke the eye socket. In the press conference that followed, St-Pierre admitted to having hit Koscheck off guard by confronting him with boxes instead of rings.

St-Pierre's next fight followed against Jake Shields on May 30, 2011 in Toronto (Canada), in front of more than 55,000 spectators, at UFC 129. In the second round of the fight, which St-Pierre won unanimously on points, he pulled one Injury to the left eye - this made it impossible for him to see clearly during the remaining time. Nick Diaz was planned as the next opponent for St-Pierre. However, when he did not appear at several press conferences, he was replaced by Carlos Condit, a training partner for St-Pierre. The fight was scheduled for UFC 137. However, St-Pierre injured his right knee shortly before the fight, which made it impossible to start the fight. Meanwhile, Nick Diaz defeated BJ Penn at UFC 137. Immediately after his fight, Diaz challenged St-Pierre by accusing him of dodging the fight. St-Pierre commented on this with the following sentence: "He's [Nick Diaz] the most disrespectful human being I've ever met and I'm going to put the worst beating you've ever seen on him in the UFC." (Eng. "He [Nick Diaz] is the most disrespectful person I've ever met and I'm going to do him as badly as no one in the UFC has ever done.") So UFC President Dana White decided to turn around again and st- Pierre to fight Nick Diaz and set the fight for UFC 143. On December 7, 2011, it was announced that St-Pierre had torn an anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee that required surgery. St-Pierre would be out of combat for likely up to ten months. Dana White decided to set up an interim title fight ("Interim Welterweight Championship") between Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz for UFC 143. St-Pierre was to fight the holder of this transitional title on his return to determine the real champion. St-Pierre has since had an operation on his knee. The operation proceeded without complications.

On November 17, 2012, St-Pierre celebrated his comeback in MMA . At UFC-154, the Canadian fought again in the Octagon for the first time in 19 months and competed in a title match against the interim welterweight title holder Carlos Condit . The title fight, which was named "Fight of the Night", ended after the full distance of 5 rounds with a clear decision in favor of Georges St-Pierre, who is currently the undisputed UFC welterweight champion.

On November 16, 2013, St-Pierre managed to defend his title against challenger Hendricks. He won with a split decision by the judges on points. With 19 wins he is the fighter with the most wins within the UFC. One month after the fight, on December 13, 2013, he announced his retirement from the sport and made his title vacant. He cited personal problems as the reason, but left open a possible return. On November 4, 2017, his debut in the middleweight division of the UFC finally made his comeback after a break of almost 4 years. The Canadian competed against Michael Bisping at UFC 217 and defeated him using a surrender grip. Thus, after the first fight in this weight class, St-Pierre is the UFC's new middleweight champion.

Film career

Since March 27, 2014, St-Pierre can be seen in the role of savateur Georges Batroc / Batroc the Leaper in Marvel's The Return of the First Avenger .
