Matthew Allen Hughes (born October 13, 1973 in Hillsboro , Illinois ) is an American mixed martial arts fighter . He is a member of the UFC Hall of Fame and a former two-time welterweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Hughes holds the records in the UFC for the most fights in the UFC, the most wins in the UFC and the most title defenses in the UFC Welterweight Championship belt with seven title defenses.

Martial arts career

Hughes was a wrestler during his school days . In January 1998 he made his MMA competition debut. Until 2001 he worked mainly for the organizer Extreme Challenge , but also in other leagues, for example in the Ultimate Fighting Championship , to which Hughes moved permanently in November 2001.

After winning the welterweight title at UFC 34 against Carlos Newton , he was able to defend the belt successively against Hayato Sakurai , Carlos Newton, Gil Castillo , Sean Sherk and Frank Trigg until he had to cede it to BJ Penn at UFC 46 in January 2004 . After defeating Renato Verissimo , Hughes took on the new champion Georges St. Pierre in October and took the title back. He was able to defend him against Trigg and Penn, but when he met St. Pierre again in November 2006 he was defeated by TKO .

Matt Hughes was the coach in seasons two and six of the reality television series The Ultimate Fighter .
