Matt Serra (born June 2, 1974 ; ring name The Terror ) is a former American mixed martial arts fighter . The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt is a former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder, season four winner of The Ultimate Fighter, and ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship silver medalist . His match record is eleven wins and seven losses.
Athletic career
Matt Serra first started with Kung Fu and then trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Renzo Gracie . He took part in the 1999 BJJ World Championships and placed second in the 2001 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship in the class up to 77 kg. Starting out at a small MMA organizer in New York, he made his UFC debut on May 4, 2001 . There he worked out a record of four wins and four losses. He was then engaged as a participant in the fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter . His win in the final against Chris Lytle secured him a title fight against Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre . To the surprise of many, Serra was able to defeat St. Pierre in the main fight of UFC 69 on April 7, 2007 by TKO in the first round and became the new titleholder. Serra then took on as a coach on the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter and should then deny a title defense against his opponent Matt Hughes , which he could not take due to an injury. As a result, he had to fight again at UFC 83 on April 19, 2008 against St. Pierre, who had now won the interim title against Hughes. This time he was defeated by TKO in the second round. His next fight, against Matt Hughes in May 2009, also ended in defeat. After defeating Frank Trigg, he lost the next encounter with Chris Lytle in September 2010. He then resigned from active MMA sport.
Matt Serra runs the Serra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu martial arts school on Long Island with his brother Nick .
