Renzo Gracie

Renzo Gracie (* 11. March 1967 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian BJJ - martial artist and member of the Gracie Family . He is a 6th degree black belt holder.

Life

Renzo Gracie has eleven siblings, including Charles Gracie, Ralph Gracie and Ryan Gracie.

In mixed martial arts he participated in the Ultimate Fighting Championship , the Pride Fighting Championship , K-1 , RINGS and the International Fight League (as head coach of the New York Pitbulls). He won fights against five previous UFC champions: Frank Shamrock (UFC light heavyweight champion), Carlos Newton (UFC welterweight champion), Pat Miletich (UFC welterweight champion), Maurice Smith (UFC heavyweight champion) and Oleg Taktarov (UFC 6 tournament winner).

He is Head Instructor of the Renzo Gracie Academy in Midtown Manhattan and also has partner academies in the United States, Brazil, Peru, Singapore, Canada, Mexico, South Africa and Israel. As a jiu-jitsu trainer, Gracie trained a number of professional fighters including Georges St-Pierre , Frankie Edgar , Chris Weidman , Ricardo Almeida , Rodrigo Gracie , Roy Nelson, and Paul Creighton . He is also the personal jiu-jitsu teacher for Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan

A documentary film from 2008 shows the influence of Gracie on the martial arts Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts for a period of ten years from its origins as a bare-knuckle boxing and the origins shows the sport from its origins to the spread in Japan and America.

Gracie is the co-author of two textbooks on jiu-jitsu: with his cousin Royler Gracie he wrote, “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Theory and Technology ”and with John Danaher“ Mastering Jujitsu ”.

In May 2014, Renzo was arrested in New York City after being charged with a group brawl. He had beaten a bouncer ready for hospital use. Gracie said he brought the bouncer to the ground but didn't hit him because he had "ticked off" beforehand. Gracie's cousin Igor Gracie was also arrested for the incident. Both pleaded guilty; they were sentenced to 15 days of community service by a New York court in May 2015 and had to pay $ 10,000 bail.

Gracie lives in Holmdel Township , New Jersey . He and his wife Cristina have three children, Catarina, Cora and Ruran.

MMA career

Renzo Gracie made his debut in the Brazilian field. He had his first match against Luiz Augusto Alvareda , which he dominated with his wrestling skills and subdued with rear naked choke . After the match, he moved to the United States to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu .

In October 1995, Gracie was called up to fight at the World Combat Championships , an event started by Jon Peter's son Christopher. Two separate tournaments for batting martial arts and grappling took part in the event , the winners of which would meet in the finals. Gracie was assigned to the latter because of his BJJ background. Here he won against the Dutch judoka Ben Spijkers and Phil Benedict and the final against kickboxer James Warring .

In 1997, Gracie took part in the Pentagon Combat , an MMA event founded by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed. He fought against Eugenio Tadeu . During the fight, the spectators began to riot, among other things there was a massive fight, shots could be heard. The event resulted in mixed martial arts being banned in Rio de Janeiro for ten years.

His first fight at the Pride Fighting Championships, Pride 1 against Japanese judo-based fighter Akira Shoji, ended in a draw. In Pride 2, against judoka and catch wrestler Sanae Kikuta , he defeated him in the sixth round after a guillotine choke . In Pride 8 he fought against wrestler Alexander Otsuka . This match ended with both of them aiming for a submission. In 2000, Gracie returned to Fighting Network Rings to fight Kazushi Sakuraba . The fight was stopped due to an injury during the game. Gracie fought at Pride 13 against the American wrestler Dan Henderson and was defeated by this. It was followed by Gracie's victory over Michiyoshi Ohara . In Pride 21 in 2002, he was defeated by Shungo Oyama . His last match for Pride 2003 was Carlos Newton , where Newton won the split decision win, which Gracie denied.

In 2006, Gracie was fighting in the International Fighting League when he guillotined Pat Miletich within three minutes. There was then a rematch against Carlos Newton. The bout ended with no result and the victory was awarded to Gracie by the judges. This result sparked controversy and Gracie himself declared that he saw Newton as the winner. In 2007 Gracie won a match against former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Frank Shamrock , who was disqualified by the referee for his unfair fighting style. After the match, Gracie had to be taken out of the ring and into his locker room by his team because he was hit with a concussion .

After a three-year hiatus, Gracie signed a six-fight contract with the UFC in December 2009 and competed against former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes in April . Hughes ended the fight against Gracie with a series of punches. Gracie lost to Hughes by TKO after 4:40 in Round 3.

On November 2nd, 2014 Renzo fought again in a grappling match in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu format " Metamoris ", which was founded by Ralek Gracie, his nephew. The fight ended in a draw.

In 2018, Gracie competed against Yuki Kondo in the One Championship Reign of Kings. This was his first fight since losing to Matt Hughes in 2010. He won the fight by rear naked choke in the second round.

On November 14, 2008, a documentary entitled "Renzo Gracie: Legacy" was released on DVD, which followed Gracie over 10 years of his life. The DVD was only released on Amazon.com and www.renzogracielegacy.com. The slogan is "A 10-year history of mixed martial arts through the eyes of Renzo Gracie, one of its most charismatic pioneers ."
