Waldemar Helmut Uhl

Waldemar Helmut Uhl (born November 24, 1960 in Rot am See-Brettheim Hohenlohe-Franken) is a German surgeon and director of the clinic for general and visceral surgery at the St. Josef Hospital in Bochum and professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

Life

After completing the general university entrance qualification in 1980 at the Gerabronn grammar school and completing basic military service as a paramedic in the Bundeswehr , he studied human medicine at Ulm University from 1981 to 1987 . In 1987 Waldemar H. Uhl received his license to practice medicine and then obtained his doctorate in medicine in the same year on the subject of "Value of differentiated enzyme analyzes and imaging methods for the diagnosis and prognosis of acute pancreatitis". Uhl successfully completed his habilitation with the title “The role of phospholipase A2 in acute pancreatitis and surgical intensive care patients” at the University of Bern in 1999. Uhl obtained his specialist certification for general surgery in Tübingen in 1994 and for visceral surgery in Reutlingen in 1999.

His career initially took him to the University Clinic in Ulm , where Uhl spent his assistant years from 1988 to 1993, then initially took over the management of the Inselspital emergency center and subsequently the position of senior physician via the University Hospital Bern (1993-2001) in Uhl . In 2001, Waldemar H. Uhl returned to Germany and then became executive senior physician at the Heidelberg University Hospital for Surgery (2001–2003). Here Uhl was not only appointed section head for transplants of the visceral organs liver, pancreas and kidneys, but also developed the role and function of section head of surgical oncology at the Heidelberg University Hospital from 2001 to 2003. In Heidelberg, Uhl worked on further development and development of the house to one of the largest liver transplant centers in Germany. In addition, Uhl completed a two-year postgraduate course in Bern in 2004 to become a certified hospital manager at the FHS University of Applied Sciences for Technology, Economics and Social Work in St. Gallen, leading to an Executive Master of Health Service Administration.

Waldemar H. Uhl was appointed to the surgical chair at the St. Josef-Hospital Bochum , Clinic of the Ruhr-University Bochum, in 2004 . Since January 1, 2004, Waldemar H. Uhl has been chief physician and medical director of the clinic for general and visceral surgery at the surgical university clinic in Bochum. Since then, the St. Josef Hospital in Bochum has developed into a supraregional, interdisciplinary pancreatic center in which over 300 patients per year undergo surgery on the pancreas .

In line with the specialization required today, the first intestinal center in Germany, certified by Dt. Cancer society . The St. Josef Hospital was subsequently established in 2009 as the second certified center for surgical pancreatic diseases in Germany by the Dt. Society for general and visceral surgery recognized. In addition, the hospital under the leadership of Uhl was certified and awarded (DKG) as one of the first pancreatic cancer centers in 2010. In 2015, the St. Josef Hospital developed through ongoing interdisciplinary cooperation into a certified visceral oncological center, managed by Waldemar H. Uhl. This makes Bochum one of the leading clinics in Germany in cancer therapy, especially tumors of the digestive tract.

Waldemar Uhl is married and has three children.

Work and research areas

Waldemar H. Uhl is a surgical specialist in diseases of the internal organs and, in particular, an expert in diseases of the pancreas. Clinical and experimental focuses are in the area of infectiology , peritonitis and sepsis and in surgical intensive medicine . Furthermore, thyroid surgery, minimally invasive surgery and the treatment of patients with malignant colon and rectal tumors are among the essential surgical key points .

Uhl and his 30 medical staff currently perform over 2,300 operations annually and care for over 3,100 inpatients per year. As a result of his many years of experience, Uhl has been listed repeatedly since 2010 in the magazine FOCUS Gesundheit as one of the best German doctors, who are recognized and valued by medical colleagues and patients as particularly competent.

honors and awards

Waldemar Uhl received the Edgar Ungeheuer Prize in 2005 for his educational film about a new surgical method on the pancreas . The German Society for Surgery (DGCH) honors contributions that are of particular scientific and didactic value for their media library. The operation video shows a modern organ-preserving method to remove the benign pancreatic head tumor as a result of chronic inflammation of the pancreas while preserving the duodenum . Since April 2005, Uhl has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the Working Group of Pancreatectomies eV (AdP). In May 2011 Uhl received the AdP Medal of Honor for his many years of voluntary work.
