The German Society for General and Visceral Surgery eV (DGAV) is a medical society for general and visceral surgery in Germany. The purpose is to promote research, training and further education, quality assurance in the field of general and visceral surgery as well as interdisciplinary cooperation with related disciplines such as gastroenterology , trauma surgery or gynecology . The DGAV was founded in 1998. The company is based in Berlin . The DGAV has around 5,600 members.

The association is a member of the Working Group of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) and the German Society for Surgery .

Publications and activities

Through the working groups, the DGAV advocates systematic medical and nursing training, further education and training in the field of general and visceral surgery. Scientific studies in the field and the implementation of the results in medical practice are funded. The DGAV is involved in quality assurance as well as educating the population about the diseases in the field. The working groups regularly publish statements, recommendations and guidelines as well as current research results.

Awards and grants

The DGAV awards several prizes for outstanding achievements in the field of general and visceral surgery, including the Rudolf Nissen Prize and the Rudolf Nissen Medal . In addition, a prize will be awarded for outstanding post-doctoral theses and dissertations in the subject. In addition, the DGAV awards an internship and a travel grant for doctors in general and visceral surgical training.
