Interior

The earliest predecessor building was a Lady Chapel from 663, where a monastery was built. It burned down in 1033 and was replaced by a larger Romanesque church. In 1191 this was also destroyed by fire. Then began the construction of the large-scale church in the style of the French cathedral Gothic, which lasted over 300 years in several construction phases and was largely completed around 1500 in the current, astonishingly closed shape.

architecture

The cathedral of Saint-Omer is a three-aisled basilica with a three -aisled transept and ambulatory choir . Three wreath chapels are attached to these . The massive, square, helmetless tower forms the western end . The main portal with a representation of the Last Judgment in the tympanum is located in the south arm of the transept.

The interior is characterized by groin vaults , ceilings with large tracery windows and triforias , which also continue in the choir and apse , including the pointed arches to the side aisles on four-service columns.

Furnishing

Unlike most of the major churches in France, the cathedral of Saint-Omer lost little of its furnishings during the revolution . Particularly noteworthy are an ecce homo group from the destroyed cathedral of Thérouanne , the cenotaph of St. Audomar (Omer), the tomb of Eustache de Croy (Bishop of Arras and provost of the cathedral chapter of Saint-Omer) by Jacques Du Brœucq and one Descent from the Cross by Peter Paul Rubens .

The large organ goes back to an instrument from 1717, which was built by the organ builders Thomas and Jean-Jacques Desfontaines (Douai). The baroque case has been preserved unchanged to this day . The large carved figures are remarkable. a. King David and St. Cäcilia (on the side pedal towers), numerous angels, the baby Jesus (central tower of the main work), faith, hope and mercy (on the level of the organ stage) represent. At the foot of the organ there are sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul on the left and right.

The organ itself contains pipe material from the Desfontaines organ, but was comprehensively restructured in 1855 by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll . Since then, the organ has only been slightly revised or restored. It has 49 stops on four manuals and a pedal .
