He had his first two MMA fights on April 17, 2004 at the organizer Rage on the River , where he was able to defeat both opponents. After four more victories, including World Extreme Fighting , he suffered his first defeat in December 2006 at the Bodog Fight - Clash of the Nations , a point decision. On January 19, 2007 he played his first fight in the IFL . After a further engagement for Bodog, he was to stay with the IFL . He defeated Mario Rinaldi and then suffered his second loss on points against Ben Rothwell . About three subsequent wins it came on December 29, 2007 to the heavyweight title fight against Antoine Jaoude . Nelson won by knockout shortly after the start of the second round and became IFL Heavyweight Champion . He defended this title against Fabiano Scherner and Brad Imes , both times by TKO in the first round.

According to the IFL

After the IFL went out of service, Nelson competed at an Elite Xtreme Combat event on October 4, 2008 against Andrei Arlovski and was knocked out in the second round. His next fight, against Jeff Monson on March 21, 2009 at Square Ring Promotions - March Badness , earned him a loss on points.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Then Roy Nelson signed up for the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter as a fighter. There he competed in the preliminary round in a highly regarded fight against Kimbo Slice and defeated him by TKO. In the final on December 5, 2009, he met Brendan Schaub , whom he knocked out in the first round. Roy Nelson was the winner of the season and won a contract with the UFC . In his first resulting fight he defeated Stefan Struve on March 31, 2010 by TKO after 39 seconds. Next he had to play against Junior dos Santos on August 7, 2010 , which earned him a point defeat. Nelson was soon feared for his clout in the UFC and celebrated numerous knockout victories. However, it was never enough for a title fight, as it regularly failed against the big opponents. On September 20, 2014 Nelson went against Mark Hunt for the first time KO himself.
