Jeffrey William Monson ( Russian Джеффри Уильям Монсон , scientific transliteration Džeffri Uiljam Monson; born January 18, 1971 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is a Russian martial artist, mixed martial arts fighter and politician ( United Russia ) of American descent. He won the ADCC Submission Grappling World Championship twice and a World Championship in No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu . In MMA he fights in the heavyweight division , in grappling competitions also in higher classes such as the super heavyweight division.

Athletic career

His career began as a member of the Oregon State University wrestling team. This takes part in Division I in the sporting competitions of the US universities. Division I is the highest performance class. In 1992 he was included in the wrestling selection of the Pacific-10 Conference . In 1993 he took part in the NCAA competitions for the University of Illinois and was eliminated in the second of five tournament rounds. Even after his active wrestling career, he continued to take part in wrestling tournaments.

He is now a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has contested three professional boxing matches (2-0-1). He is also a heavyweight champion of the International Sports Karate Association.

Monson is currently training as a member of the American Top Team, a mixed martial arts gym, in Coconut Creek , Florida . His match record in MMA is currently 42 wins and 11 losses. He completed his first fight in 1997. In the prestigious UFC organization, he completed 7 fights, the last was a 2006 championship fight in the heavyweight division against Tim Sylvia. Monson lost on points. Since then he has been fighting in smaller organizations. Other outstanding opponents were Fedor Emelianenko , to whom he lost on points, Forrest Griffin , Chuck Liddell , Josh Barnett, Ricco Rodriguez and Roy Nelson .

Private life

Jeff Monson is married with two children. Before he devoted himself to martial arts full-time, he worked as a family therapist. He has master's degrees in psychology and political science.

anarchism

Monson is known for his anarchist beliefs and is a member of the IWW union . He uses the popularity he has gained through martial arts to spread his views. On May 23, 2006, Monson participated in a blockade of the port of Olympia by anti-war activists. They wanted to prevent the loading of military vehicles. Except for Monson and one other person, the blockade was cleared. The police finally diverted the vehicles after an hour. Monson told the police, If you try to arrest me, I will resist . In 2009, he sprayed the Washington State Capitol with an anarchy mark and the words "No War" and "No Poverty" to protest the Iraq war and in protest against social injustice. He committed the act while he was escorted by a team from TV broadcaster ESPN to shoot a portrait of him. The broadcaster later released the pictures of Monson in the act, who was fined approximately 22,000 US dollars .

Position on Russia

At a press conference on September 24, 2015, Jeff Monson expressed his intention to apply for Russian citizenship. Previously, during his fights, he had expressed solidarity with the residents of Donbass and appeared in the ring with Russian symbolism. He was finally granted Russian citizenship in May 2018. In September 2016 he received a passport from the internationally unrecognized People's Republic of Lugansk .

In 2018, Monson was elected to the city council of the Russian city of Krasnogorsk as a formally independent MP on the United Russia Party's list. According to Russian law, as a public official he had to renounce his US citizenship .
