Royler Gracie
Royler Gracie (born December 6, 1965 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a former Brazilian-American mixed martial arts fighter and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu grandmaster. For many years he directed the Gracie Humaitá School in Rio de Janeiro under the direction of his father Helio and lives and teaches in San Diego, California.
biography
As the son of the late Grand Master Helio Gracie and brother of Rickson and Royce Gracie , Royler belongs to the Gracie Family . He holds a 7th degree red / black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the style his family developed.
Before he retired from active MMA sport, Royler competed in various tournaments for over 20 years. Royler is also a four-time Jiu-Jitsu World Champion in the Pena / Featherweight Black Belt category.
He holds a professional mixed martial arts record of five wins, five losses and one draw.
His last fight took place on September 14, 2011 at the age of 45 when he lost to Masakatsu Ueda by a split decision.
In 2003, Royler Gracie met Eddie Bravo in the quarter-finals of the ADCC tournament in the under 66 kg class.
Royler was 38 years old at the time but was still considered one of the favorites to win the division. Bravo, who was only wearing the brown belt at the time, surprisingly dominated him with his " Rubber Guard ", which was still largely unknown at the time , from which he forced Royler to give up with a triangle choke .
On March 29, 2014, there was a highly anticipated rematch against Eddie Bravo in the "Metamoris III" tournament format.
Despite the clear dominance of Bravo, who controlled Gracie in his lockdown for almost the entire fight time of 30 minutes , and made several attacks using his "vaporizer", a calf crank and a twister , the match ended in a draw, as the first 20 minutes had no points were rated. This rule should prevent an opponent from taking the lead early with points and then holding the points for a longer period of time, which would end the fight in a "lay and pray" and thus become uninteresting for the spectators.
Media appearances
In an episode of the third season of the US series "Wildboyz", Steve-O and Chris Pontius visit Brazil and the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school in Rio de Janeiro. Royler confronts Chris Pontius and dominated him with a choke while the student Leticia Ribeiro Steve-O via Armbar - Submission defeated.

Gracie co-authored three textbooks on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Theory and Practice with his cousin Renzo Gracie
