Eddie Alvarez (* 11. January 1984 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American MMA fighters and former UFC champion in the lightweight . He is currently under contract with ONE Championship.
Private
Eddie Alvarez was born and raised in the Irish district of Kensington as the son of an Irish mother and a Puerto Rican father. After attending Northeast Catholic High School, he focused on a career as a martial artist. He 'd started wrestling in high school and was twice National Prep All-American. Despite some scholarships , he could not afford a college financially. He bridged the time until the beginning of his professional career as a worker in a concrete company.
In December 2010, he opened the first MMA clothing and equipment store in Philadelphia. Eddie Alvarez has been married since 2008 and has three sons and a daughter. The family lives in Northeast Philadelphia. His younger brother Albert is also an MMA fighter.
Career
In 2003 he turned pro and won ten fights in a row by knockout, eight of them in the first round. In June 2006 he became MFC welterweight champion by knocking out Derrick Noble in the first round (record: 18-8). In April 2007 he suffered his first defeat against UFC veteran Nick Thompson (31-9) when he lost to Bodog Fight - Clash of the Nations by TKo in the second round.
Alvarez then switched to EliteXC and took part in the DREAM Grand Prix in 2008 , where he reached the final in the lightweight against André Amado (6-1), Joachim Hansen (17-6) and Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-4). However, he was unable to compete there due to an injury. In November 2008 Alvarez should have fought against Nick Diaz for the EliteXC championship title, but the duel was canceled due to the bankruptcy of the owner ProElite. In December 2008 Alvarez lost the K-1 Dynamite !! against Shin'ya Aoki (18-3) with a heel hook in the first round.
From 2009 he fought for Bellator FC and qualified for the Bellator Championship by beating Greg Loughran (18-12) and Eric Reynolds (11-1). In this fight he defeated Toby Imada (24-13) by a rear-naked choke in the second round and became the first lightweight title holder of this organization. He then defeated Katsunori Kikuno (12-1), Josh Neer (27-9), Roger Huerta (21-4) and Pat Curran (13-3). In November 2011 he lost to Michael Chandler (8-0), but then won against Shin'ya Aoki (30-5) and Patricky Freire (10-3) by knockout in the first round. He thus qualified for a rematch against Chandler (12-0) and defeated this in November 2013 over five rounds on points.
In August 2014, Alvarez moved to the UFC and put down his Bellator title. He lost his debut on points to Donald Cerrone (24-6), but then beat Gilbert Melendez (22-4) and Anthony Pettis (18-3). In July 2016 he fought for the UFC lightweight championship against Rafael dos Anjos (25-7) and won through TKo in the first round. In his first title defense in November 2016, he lost to Conor McGregor (20-3). In May 2017, his fight against Dustin Poirier (21-5) ended worthless due to an accidental foul. In December 2017 he won early against Justin Gaethje (18-0). Alvarez had his last fight with the UFC on July 28, 2018 on the television show on Fox, where he lost Dustin Poirier to TKO.
On October 17, 2018, Singapore- based ONE Championship announced that they had signed Alvarez.
