Sylvester Reisacher

Sylvester Reisacher (born March 9, 1862 in Wolfertschwenden , † March 19, 1916 in Munich ) was a German history, portrait and landscape painter.

Sylvester Reisacher was born as the youngest of ten children of the Weber couple Gabriel and Therese Reisacher. Like his older brothers Hans, Gregor and Vitus, he learned the painting trade.

Thanks to the Maximilianeum Foundation , Reisacher studied with Louis Braun at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich from October 15, 1884 .

After graduating, he spent some time in Nuremberg, Bamberg, Lützen and Leipzig. Back in Bavaria, he mainly dealt with panorama painting. He also painted a portrait of Ludwig II.

Reisacher visited Russia, where he portrayed Tsar Nicholas II . He also visited the countries of the Balkans and the Middle East, as well as Holland.

In 1902 Reisacher completed six large battle paintings in the form of dioramas from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871.

During a visit to Paris Reisacher was influenced by Impressionism. Since then he has devoted himself to landscape painting, especially the mountain landscapes from the Allgäu, the Bavarian Alps and the Engadine.

Five of his large-format battle pictures are in the Anglo-Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein ( South Africa ).
