Terence Allan Crawford (born September 28, 1987 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American professional boxer, former world champion of the WBO lightweight, and former world champion of the IBF , WBO, WBC and WBA light welterweight. He has been WBO welterweight champion since June 2018. It is ranked second in the world by Ring Magazine (June 2019).
Amateur career
Terence Crawford started boxing at the age of seven and won 58 out of 70 fights. In 2006 he won the silver medal in the lightweight at the National Golden Gloves and a bronze medal in the lightweight at the US championships in 2006 and 2007. In the course of his amateur days he defeated, among others, the future professional world champions Miguel García and Danny García .
In the US Olympic elimination for the 2008 Summer Olympics , he won against Diego Magdaleno and Mason Menard, but lost to Sadam Ali and Miguel González. However, he had already won against Miguel González in a previous encounter.
Professional career
After he had not qualified for the Olympic Games due to his retirement, he switched to the professional camp in 2008 under the promoter TKO Boxing Promotions and the manager Brian McIntyre. He has been under contract with Top Rank since 2011 and is coached by Brian McIntyre, Esau Dieguez and Red Spikes.
In March 2008 he won his first professional fight. In his 20th fight on March 30, 2013 in Las Vegas , he hit a major opponent for the first time when he managed a points win over ten rounds against Breidis Prescott . On June 15, 2013 he won by technical knockout in the sixth round against Alejandro Sanabria (balance: 34-1) the North American championship of the WBO lightweight. On October 5 of the same year he also prevailed in Florida on points against Andrei Klimow (16-0).
On March 1, 2014, he boxed in Scotland for the WBO lightweight world championship against the Scottish title holder Ricky Burns . Crawford went for the first time in his career over the full twelve laps and in the end won a unanimous point victory. At the end of June 2014 he defended the title by knockout in the ninth round against Yuriorkis Gamboa . He boxed for the first time as a professional in his hometown of Omaha. In November 2014, he defeated the North American champion Raymundo Beltrán unanimously on points. Crawford was subsequently recognized as the number 1 lightweight by Ring Magazine .
Crawford then rose to the light welterweight division and defeated Thomas Dulorme (22-1) prematurely on April 18, 2015 in the fight for the WBO World Cup. In October 2015 he defended the title in the tenth round against Dierry Jean (29-1). He won another defense early in February 2016 against Henry Lundy (26-5).
On July 23, 2016, he defeated the WBC title holder Wiktor Postol (28-0) unanimously on points and had his opponent down twice. He has since carried the WBO and the WBC title and was now number 1 in this weight class by Ring Magazine. In December 2016, he successfully defended his title against John Molina (29-6). In May 2017 he defeated Félix Díaz (19-1) prematurely by giving up Díaz's corner.
On August 19, 2017 he defeated the WBA and IBF title holder Julius Indongo (22-0) by knockout and thus became the holder of the world title of all four major world federations (WBA, WBO, WBC, IBF) in a weight class, which was before him only Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor had succeeded.
He resigned the IBF title eleven days later because he had too little preparation time for an upcoming mandatory defense of the association against Sergei Lipinez . In addition, Crawford opted for a promotion to welterweight and a fight for the WBO title in this weight class against Jeff Horn (18-0) in April 2018, which is why he resigned his other world titles by February 2018. He then won his sixth world title against Jeff Horn on June 9, 2018 through TKO in the ninth round.
He defended this on October 13, 2018 by TKO in the twelfth round against José Benavidez (27-0) and on April 20, 2019 by TKO in the sixth round against Amir Khan (33-4).
