John Molina ( jun. ) (* 28. December 1982 in Covina , California ) is an American professional boxer in the Light Welterweight .

Career

The son of a former boxer is around 1.79 m tall and graduated from Charter Oak High School in Corvina in 2001. After trying his hand at athletics and wrestling , he focused on boxing and had his first amateur fight in 2002. He won 22 of 24 fights and is the winner of the California Golden Gloves in 2002 and 2003.

In March 2006 he made his professional debut and remained unbeaten in 18 fights before he was outdone by Mexican Martin Honorio in November 2009 in the fight for the NABF and NABO lightweight titles . In his following six fights he was undefeated again, winning the NABO title against Henry Lundy and the WBC- US title against Alejandro Rodriguez .

With a record of 24 wins (19 early) and one defeat, he boxed for the WBC lightweight world title on September 8, 2012 against Antonio DeMarco , but lost in the first round by technical knockout (TKo).

Molina is considered a boxer with limited technique, but has a fighter's heart, ability to take and punch in both fists. In July 2013 he defeated the later IBF world champion Mickey Bey by TKo one minute before the end of the fight, after Bey had clearly dominated the entire fight and had already provoked Molina with gestures and a lack of cover. In April 2014 he boxed against Lucas Matthysse , both boxers suffered two knockdowns in the course of the fight. Molina finally lost by knockout in the eleventh round, the fight was voted fight of the year by Ring Magazine . Against the technically clean fighters Andrei Klimow and Adrien Broner he suffered point defeats in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

In June 2016 he surprisingly defeated Ruslan Prowodnikov over twelve rounds by unanimous decision. At this time, Prowodnikow was led by the WBC in first place and by WBO and WBA in second place in their world rankings of challengers.

He then received a title chance for the belts of the WBO and WBC of the undefeated title holder Terence Crawford on December 10, 2016 . Since Molina weighed in before the fight over the weight limit, he could not box directly for the title. In the event of his win against Crawford, he would have had to give up his belt, whereupon Molina would have had another chance for the title. In the fight itself, Molina was hopelessly inferior and was hit by Crawford at will before he was taken out of the fight by the referee in the eighth round.

On December 15, 2017, he defeated the Ukrainian Ivan Redkach by knockout in the fourth round, after he had previously been knocked down himself. He played his next fight on February 16, 2019 against Omar Figueroa and lost controversially on points. The commentator Larry Hazzard, inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame , had rated the fight 96:94 for Molina.

On September 28, 2019, Molina lost to Josesito López by dropping out of the referee in the eighth round .
