Professional career

In 2004 he started his professional career and won his first 22 fights early. He was in April 2006 WBO Latin American light welterweight champion. On September 12, 2008, his fight against the Mexican Rogelio Castañeda ended valueless ("No Contest") because Castañeda was injured by an accidental headbutt and could not continue the fight.

After five more wins, including knockout successes against Luis Ernesto José (29-5), Florencio Castellano (16-3) and Vivian Harris (29-3), he received a fight for the North American on November 6, 2010 WBO championship title against Zab Judah , which was also traded as an elimination duel for a future world championship fight. However, Matthysse lost the match after 12 controversial rounds by a tight split decision (split point decision), although he had Judah on the ground in the tenth round.

After a subsequent knockout win against DeMarcus Corley , he was defeated on June 25, 2011 by double world champion Devon Alexander again by a tight split decision. He also had Alexander on the ground in the fourth round. Knockout victories against Sergio Priotti, Ángel Martínez (13-1) and Humberto Soto (58-7) gave him the right to challenge the interim WBC world light welterweight championship against Ajose Olusegun (30-0). Matthysse won the fight in Las Vegas by knockout in the tenth round. On January 26, 2013 he defended the title by knockout in the first round against Mike Dallas junior (19-2), the Latin American champion of the WBO from California.

On May 18, 2013 he defeated the reigning IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-1) by tKo in the third round, but lost on September 14 on points against Danny García (26-0).
