Ruslan Michailowitsch Prowodnikow ( Russian Руслан Михайлович Проводников , English transcription ; Ruslan Mikhailovich Provodnikov ; born January 20, 1984 in Berjosowo ) is a Russian professional boxer and former world champion of the WBO in the light welfare class.

Amateur career

As an amateur, he won 130 of 150 fights. His greatest successes were winning the 5th European Cadet Championships in Athens in 2000 and the 6th Brandenburg Cup in 2001 in Frankfurt (Oder) . In both competitions he won against Nikolajs Grišuņins from Latvia, Denis Litwinenko from Ukraine, the German representatives Alexander Müller and Robby Siebert, and the Indian Olympic participant Diwakar Prasad.

Due to strong competition in his home country, he was denied further major international appearances. So he was defeated in national eliminations against, among others, vice world champion Eduard Absalimow and Olympic champion Alexei Tishchenko .

Professional career

In 2006 he switched to the professional field and won his debut on December 3 in Yekaterinburg by unanimous decision against Kirill Artemiev. He was also able to win his next twelve fights, eight of them by knockout. The defeated opponents also included the unbeaten Brian Gordon (4-0) and Abdulasis Matasimow (7-0). Then he boxed on November 28, 2009 in Samara against Victor Hugo Castro for the WBO intercontinental championship in the light welterweight division, had the Argentine already in the first round and finally won by knockout in the second round.

In his next fight on February 12, 2010 in Temecula , he defeated former IBF world champion Javier Rogelio Jáuregui by tKo in the eighth round. In May of the same year, he also won through tKo in the ninth round against Emanuel Augustus . When fighting for the North American Championship of the IBF on January 7, 2011 in Las Vegas , he lost to Mauricio Herrera on points. In April 2011 he won prematurely against Iván Popoca (15-0).

On December 5, 2011 he secured the Asian championship title of the WBC unanimously on points against ex-WBO world champion DeMarcus Corley . After two more wins against David Torres (21-2) and José Reynoso (16-3), he qualified for a world welterweight championship fight against WBO title holder Timothy Bradley . Prowodnikow was able to cover his opponent several times with heavy impact hits and had Bradley on the ground in rounds 1 and 12, but lost after the full twelve rounds controversially on points.

On October 19, 2013 he defeated the light welterweight Mike Alvarado (34-1) in Denver by giving up after the tenth round and thus became the new world champion of the WBO. In June 2014, however, he was just defeated on points against Chris Algieri (19-0), although he had twice on the ground. In November he defeated José Castillo (66-12) prematurely.

In April 2015 he suffered a point defeat against Lucas Matthysse (36-3). In November 2015 he defeated the Mexican Jesus Rodríguez (14-0) prematurely in the fourth round. In June 2016 he suffered another point defeat against John Molina (28-6).
